Irrational in your opinion, Vinnie. These points just emphasize psychological differences in men and women, IMHO. How many stupid things have you heard a man say about a team, an thlete, etc, but you still think they are OK? Personally, I don’t get hotted up over male athletes and I am 100% straight. You think I love the DBacks because I think Randy Johnson is hot–sheesh, give me some credit, willya? I think Derek Jeter is very hot, but I’ve never supported the Yankees, not this year, not last year, never.
I love my teams, but I watch others when they are not on because I love the game. I know you exist on this board to stir up controversy, but you are going to have to do better than this to get me to rip you. BTW, Curt Schilling also came to Phoenix because he grew up here and was excited to play for his hometown.
Vinnie–You need to start hanging out with a better class of women.
eyewearlime–I think you’re onto something when you say that women may be less interested in individual statistics and more interested in “soft” factors. I don’t care that Bernie Williams has hit 16 post-season homers. I do care that he didn’t run hard out of the box in the world series. That was really lame.
It’s a rough year to be a Broncos fan. =(
I too like any AFC team over any NFC. But I have a hard time cheering for anybody in the AFC West because well, they are direct competition of the Broncos. Even if it’s in a Superbowl (Not that that’s come up recently, but you know…).
Uh, it’s kinda hard to drool over a football player. And during the course of the game they’ll show head shots and I’ll say, “hmmmm, he’s cute”, but I don’t say, “hmmmm, he’s cute, I better root for his team!”
Give me a break. The only reason my husband roots for any team is because I do, and he wants to to con me into thinking he’s a “cool” guy.
Actually, I made it clear to him, “On Sundays we watch football in my house. Get used to it.”
I’m only going to grant you that because most men do it too. Just because you have a penis doesn’t mean you automatically know all about the teams and sports, and never, ever have an irrational opinion. So, in other words, that’s accurate if you take out “female” completely. Most sports fans…
And if the women Vinnie knows are the types who call into talk shows (sports or otherwise) then I don’t think we can take him too seriously. For that matter, he listens to talk shows. 'Nuff said.
But seriously, it is likely that the more emotional people are about sports the less rational they are about it. Pretty much like every other topic. (This explains a lot of callers to sports talk shows, as well as certain GD threads). So if it is indeed true that women tend to have more of an emotional relationship to their teams, it is not out of the realm of possiblity that they are on average less rational about it. (Of course, exceptions will abound, as with all other such generalizations).
