It’s friday night, and I didn’t have any appointments tonight, so I rented a few videos. First off, I watched “Being John Malkovich”. Great movie, very nice, absurd story. I was impressed. But BJM was blown away by my second choice of the evening.
FESTEN (“The Celebration”)
A Danish film that won the Special Jury Prize in Cannes in 1998. It is about a family celebration: the Pater Familias turns 60, and all the children are invited. They all gather in a huge Danish mansion, and have a great dinner.
I won’t put in any spoilers, don’t worry. But suffice it to say this film is easily one of the ten best movies I’ve ever seen. What a masterpiece! It made me tear up at times. ME! Coldie! Mr. Rationality!
Trust the ol’ ClogBoy on this one. If you haven’t seen it yet, rush out and RENT IT NOW. You won’t regret it - it is a unique and striking film.
That is all. I shall now commence my usual Friday Night Posting Ritual. Bottle of Jack to the left, Pink Floyd on the CD Player. Life is indeed pretty damn good
I’ll check it out as soon as it is dubbed. You want to rent a good sleeper of the year?, rent Snatch. simply the best movie I have seen in years. The movie didn’t make me cry or nothing, simply made me laugh out loud and thanked god some movies are still made in Britain.
The celebration is pretty good. i wouldn’t put it in 10 best, but it’s pretty damn good.
I just saw another Danish film that blew me away. It’s called Possessed, and is a danish hospital horror genre film. Fuck was it scary. I mean, this was a fucking good horror film. Really good. I watch a lot of horror, and I was impressed by the film. A sterling acheivment from start to finish. Plus it had Udo Kier, what more could you want?
Coldfire, I’m surprised you hadn’t seen Festen before. Do you Dutchmen dislike the Danes or something? Festen was my favourite movie of 1998. I thought it was both psychologicially and visually stunning–the only time “Dogme 98” has actually worked. A warning for US/UK Dopers who will see it on video–the subtitles don’t always tally with the actual script (as confirmed by my Norwegian/Danish-speaking wife). The swearing is a lot more creative in Danish
And Plasmic, not only are you a pathetic troll, but you have crap taste in movies. Snatch was universally and rightly panned in the UK.
