FIFA Women's World Cup 2015

I thought that was the most exciting game so far, wide open play, not too much diving. I thought the ref generally did a good job, and let the ladies play and gave warnings and a couple of caution cards when things looked like they might be getting out of hand.

I agree that both actual PKs probably should not have been PKs. However, it looked like the US could have had two other PKs – Rapinoe and Morgan seemed to be genuinely pulled down in the box (that is, they didn’t flop on minor contact). It’s possible that they sold those, though.

So, I was happy to see the US score on a beautiful play, with no controversy about offsides, bad corner calls, or lame PKs. Makes the result seem more valid.

Some great saves by both goalies, but other than the first 10 minutes and right after they missed the PK, Germany didn’t do much. The US dominated pretty handily.

I’m rooting for England tomorrow, then US and Germany this weekend.

I just watched the taped US-Germany match. delayed victory dance

That Germany penalty was a thing of beauty. Hope Solo dived the wrong way, but it still missed. The game as a whole was a blast to watch.

My prediction/wish: England wins tomorrow, the US wins Sunday.

It turns out, that side was the USA!!

More recently (and less silly-ly), it’ll also look back to the 1950 World Cup group stage match between the US and England in which the US beat England. Given how completely (and understandably) neurotic the English are about their national team, it might well be fun to see us beat them. More likely, though, given the Lionesses’ good performance in the tournament (particularly as compared to the men), they’ll come home as heroes regardless of the outcome in either tomorrow’s match or (potentially) the final.

For me, as a Man City fan, a US-ENG final is the best of all possible worlds–the US for obvious reasons, and England has a good number of MCWFC ladies on the side who I’d be very pleased to see come back to England as Champions.

TBF Germany looked fairly toothless against France too. Take Sasic out of the game and Germany doesnt have a second option. Great performsnce by the USA.

Will Hope Solo win the Golden Ball?
Carli Lloyd needs two goals in the final to tie Sasic for goals leader.
Does nobody from England or Japan have more than one goal?

I’m on DISH in Arkansas and had no coverage of the US vs Germany game today. Supposed to have it tomorrow. I will watch but I hate knowing beforehand what the result is.

Where, when, & on what network did you all see it today… er on Tuesday the 30th? Not in the US?

I am hoping that internet stability returns tonight, so that I can watch matches tonight. The games are not being played in local cable (sadly).

I’m not a knowledgeable viewer, but I thought both sides played very well and their defenses seemed quite rugged most of the time. My question is this: suppose we take the women’s champion and put them in the 32 team men’s field. Do they win any games? Do they emerge from group play? Where would they rank in that field?

I’m surprised you couldn’t find it. The US game was on Fox broadcast. (I thought DISH had locals everywhere these days.) My guess is that the England/Japan game today will be on Fox Sports 1 and not broadcast, but I don’t know for sure. I’d expect the championship game on Sunday will be on Fox broadcast as well, and the third-place game on Fox Sports 1.

England-Japan is on Fox Sports 1 (7 pm Eastern US time).
3rd place game is on Fox broadcast (4 pm Eastern US time).
Final is on Fox broadcast (7 pm Eastern US time).

At least that’s what my tv listings currently say.

They wouldn’t score a goal.

Against anyone? Suppose it’s the US women vs Qatar men?

Nope.

What’s worse is that they’d give up so many goals that it would be embarrassing.

Color me shocked. I didn’t really think the US would win; I was just hoping for a good game. Great job by Ellis by changing the formation and then the team just played extremely well! (and got lucky that Julie Johnson wasn’t red carded) Very well done! If they play this way in the Final, I don’t think either Japan or England could stand against us.

How bad was the yellow vs red card call there? Do the Germans have a valid beef? Of course, failing to cash in on the penalty was more critical.

How bad was the penalty at the edge of the box vs Germany?

Did the US just get two enormous breaks that made all the difference?

We don’t have cable TV at our house, but at the beginning of the tournament, my wife gave me an early Father’s Day gift of a one-month subscription to something called foxsoccer2go. It’s basically an app for your computer that lets you stream games live, with a single commentator providing game coverage. I’ve been watching most of the games through that. We’ve got a cable that connects our laptop to our TV, so it isn’t even like we’ve had to watch games on a computer screen. And, apart from the one guy who kept pronouncing Megan Rapinoe’s last name as RAP-i-no, the commentating has been much better than what I’ve seen on Fox.

I think it only cost something like $15 or thereabouts, so if you’re concerned about availability of any of the remaining three WWC games that might not be too bad a price. Plus, you’ll still have the remainder of your month for coverage of a lot of other soccer (CONCACAF Gold Cup, for example) and some bonus rugby.

I think they do. You can argue that the German player went down too easily, but once you are going to call a foul there, it seems to be quite an obvious denial of goal scoring opportunity, which equates to a red card. Maybe the ref thought there was another defender close enough that made that not the case (or that Hope Solo was in position to grab the ball regardless of any contact).

I was intrigued by this and looked it up. Yes, you are right that England had a really low percentage possession. 37%. That’s insane.

It may surprise you that they only had two shots off target less than Canada and two shots on target more.

I’d be curious to see the stats broken down by half. My feeling was that in the first half, England spent the majority of the time on their heels and Canada had a number of fantastic chances. In the second half, England played a much more solid game. They must have still been conceding possession but they kept Canada far away from the scoring areas as best I could see. They also were doing a good job in generating chances off of the counterattack in the second half. I’d expect the stats to show that England made up some good ground on the shots and shots on target in the second half.
