Ok, FIFA has the possession at 58/42 overall, and 57/43 at the half. The shots back me up though: 8 shots, 2 on target for Canada. 3 shots, and 2 on target for England.
When my nephew was around 14 or so, his ODP team scrimmaged the fill women’s team. Score was 0-0 (he had the “pleasure” of marking Abby Wambach for most of the match). It’s pretty typical for the women to scrimmage teen boys. They’d get blown out by any men’s World Cup team.
Were the women actually playing full effort?
Obviously you would not expect the women’s team to put as much effort or put themselves on the line as much in a scrimmage than say a WC match and it would also be an opportunity for wholesale experimentation. Equally though the boys team would probably be instructed to moderate their play to avoid injury to their opponents (as would happen in a scrimmage between men’s teams) and might be asked to play in a way that is not their usual way (i.e. to ape the tactics/formation of upcoming opponent).
This should be very interesting. Japan is the most skilled team in the Tournament, but they are small. No Solo or Angerer either. England needs to find a way to gain possession and draw fouls, because their best chances will come from set pieces.
Looking forward to it.
Terrible call.
What a dive.
The Fox analysts, who seem to be pretty objective, think that the call on England was outside the area, but the call on Japan (even though it looked like a dive from the angle we saw a replay of) was correct.
England look more dangerous right now, just hit a crossbar and then forced the keeper to make a great save.
Basic error there. She used the wrong foot.
ETA:
Kind of glad it isn’t going on further. It is 3am here and I have work tomorrow, but I felt duty bound to stay up due to, well, England.
Wow, what a ridiculous ending. Crazy own-goal on England 2 minutes plus into stoppage time. That would have been an amazing shot if it had been intentional.
So a rematch of the last World Cup final coming up on Sunday. This time I think we’re clearly the better team. Of course, I thought that four years ago.
Ah, this is a little nuance that I didn’t pick up on myself. I was going to say that I didn’t see that she did anything wrong, but I see the problem now. If she had used her right foot she would have been able to swing her hips and direct it wide.
What a heartbreaker! And, watching her after the game practically made me burst out crying. What a terrible way to end the game. Poor England!
Just the other day I’d been trying to recall some own-goals that decided major games. Poor Laura Bassett . . .
Just gutted for England. Honestly, they need to come up with some mythology to explain this; it’s easier that way. An Irish traveller showed up at Wembley in 1967 with his goat, and the goat wasn’t allowed in, so he cursed the English national teams forever. It’s just not right–England gives the world its game, and then is consigned to eternal defeat in it.
Ah well. We’ve got your back, Lionesses; Japan’s going down on Sunday. Also, I’ll be hoping for you to embarass the Germans on Saturday–it’d be a good receipt for various humiliations of the national team in the past.
“She’s got to be the sickest woman in Canada right now!”
Craziest ending I can remember. And now for a rematch of 4 years ago!
I don’t feel sorry for England, they equalized 1-1 on a diving act. Bad call.
I watched several different angles on replay and there was contact, there was a foul, may have been some dramatics etc., etc…
Several things missed by the officials, just as every replay will show in every game. Part of the gase & all that…
Wanna get upset with dives, just watch the men’s World Cup… Bawahahaha
I finally figured out what has been bugging me.
“Bobby Pins.”
When were those allowed?
Elastic or rubber bands for ladies of all ages.
I never heard that it was now OK. When did this happen?
I don’t remember seeing them before this year in any female game.
They don’t let men use them even though some really need to. Bawahahaha
I was taught that bobby pins are a safety concern and no way is it a religious thing.
I Goggled up this but it is all about Arabic religion.
As a ref, I personally checked all hats, like stocking hats when playing in the cold & snow. It was about safety. Just like the head smash in the US vs Germany game, it is a good thing neither had bobby pins. At least I did not think either of the did although many players in that game had them.
Have I just been too much looking at T&A and been missing this for years or is this a recent thing?
IMO, they are dangerous and not needed. 2" stiff metal things on players heads is not a good idea IMO.
About what you’d expect from a scrimmage. Same for the boys.
Pretty sure the boys weren’t aping an upcoming opponent. I watched the game. The teams were pretty evenly matched.
And while these were 14 year olds, they were very very good 14 year olds. Basically the top players in So. Cal. I think the women typically scrimmage boys a bit older, 16-18.
