FIFA Women's World Cup Final: USA v. Japan Commentary Thread

I know that’s a pun, but she stopped one out of 4, that’s a good average. Too bad the first 3 pks from the US were among the worst you’ll ever see.

Alex Morgan is pretty too.

There’s enough scoring in hockey that a playoff game keeps going until there’s a winner, no shootout.

The US had 31 shots…

Why do you follow soccer threads?

I’m aware, I’m just really sick of how quickly some people go to “See, that’s what’s wrong with soccer, it’s (boring/slow/too hard to score)”. I’ve never heard anybody say, “That’s what’s wrong with basketball, you can just score way too much in one game”.

Hope Solo - The most overrated keeper in football? Maybe.

Why would it be the biggest choke? They played almost the same game in the Brazil game, only in this version we were Brazil. Nobody called Brazil’s game the biggest choke in history.

That was a lot of fun to watch. Congratulations to Japan, they played well and rose to the occasion when they needed to.

Alex Morgan is pretty damn hot, btw.

I think emotionally and psychologically Japan had an advantage in this game. Everyone was so cheering for them, I know subconsciously I was, because of their tragedy.

Maybe this was a factor with the US players “missing” the PK’s?

Because the US should have scored like 9 goals? Because they went 1 for 4 on pks?

That was a gigantic choke.

I don’t think the US gave the game away out of sympathy.

Well, at least they lost as a team, You can go down the lineup and point out exactly where each person cost them a goal with a failure to be precise .(except Morgan)

Well, they wouldn’t be obvious about it. I guess only those players will ever know.

… You’re joking right?

While I am not a member of the Women’s Team, I can guarantee you that they did not lose on purpose. No one that competes at this level would even contemplate such a thing.

It was just a thought…You must admit though that deep down, doesn’t it feel good that despite being dominated, Japan won.

No.

But this statement doesn’t automatically lead to your original comment. Yes, it does feel good for Japan to win, but I doubt the American women are as happy about it as a neutral supporter. You think Abby Wambach- who has most likely played in her last World Cup- ever contemplated the possibility of letting Japan win? Of course, she ended up scoring on her penalty shot. Perhaps the 3 players before her were thinking, “Hell, we’re young and we’ll be back here again. Japan needs some good news.”

I think what really needs to be mentioned is how great this match was for the women’s game. Few fouls, no diving, fair refereeing decisions, and some real quality in the game. The women’s game is much maligned for its lack of quality in comparison to the men’s game, and is often cited for its poor play and sub-par goal keeping. This match negated all of those criticisms.

Not at all. When Kumagai stepped up to take her penalty, there wasn’t any part of me that wanted her to score. Now that it’s over, I’m happy for them and certainly don’t begrudge them their victory, but I wanted to win from the moment it started.
