Fight the H8 rallys this Saturday! Find your city.

The one here in Rhode Island had a couple hundred people maybe; I’m a really bad judge of numbers! I see olivesmarch4th and I had the same idea, as this is my sign.

My kids made our signs. One said, “My family supports love” and the other said, “Equal Rights for Everyone.” They colored them and my older son added about five thousand exclamation points to the equal rights one.

Thanks for the link. Went to the one in Orlando and was also worried about it raining but despite scary downgusts it was totally clear. More than a thousand people showed up, and seemed like a perfect place for catcalls or counterdemonstrations, being almost smack dab in the heart of downtown, but there were at most 2 counterdemonmstrators and they were surrounded by fellow anti-2 supporters to the extent I wasn’t even sure if they were really anti-SSM

Being my first demonstation as a participant, I did not bring a sign, which is as well because from as far back as I was the signs from where I was were mainly blocking my sight to the speakers

Here are pictures from Raleigh (I didn’t take these). I’m surprised there aren’t any of us - the guy in the gold shirt, with the rainbow flag, was standing directly in front of me, so the photographer must have been right next to me at one point.

I was at the one in San Diego today, it was great and it was HOT. At least 87 degrees and blazing sunny. It’s really hard to gauge the size of a crowd when you’re in it, but it seemed like more than 10,000 to me. It was also LENGTHY - at least 6 miles. My spouse and I went along with 3 of our straight friends (they’re the bomb :)). By the time we got to the end, we were too tired to stay through the rally. Only a couple of protesters, but tons of supporters hanging out windows and honking their horns (despite the fact that we were walking through their green light for the 8th time!) My signs said “Equality for All - Yes We Can” and “What Love has joined together let no H8te force apart - Honor my marriage”. My favorite other signs were: very scruffy guy with “Do you want me marrying your daughter?” and “Gay - the new Black”. Also, “The Arc of History Bends towards Justice”. I’m so glad I went and thanks to everyone giving their support to this in any way.

The early estimate was apparently really low. According to the U-T, the last numbers for San Diego were between 20,000 and 25,000 people. As far as my BIL saw, the only people protesting the march were 2 supporters of Prop 8, and, oddly, a guy with an anti-illegal immigration sign (way to stay on topic, dude).

My BIL didn’t have a sign, but wore a t-shirt that said “Straight against H8”. I want one of those shirts.

I was at the San Francisco protest this morning, and the civic center plaza was absolutely packed. People started spontaneously marching down Market St. towards the Castro. SF police were very nice as they blocked off traffic, even though we didn’t have a permit to march (just a permit for the rally).

Penchan and I went to downtown Berkeley where, predictably, there was no opposition to the 100 or so people gathered there. We marched around the block and a number of people honked for support. We took the opportunity to check out the farmer’s market, and headed home.

We were pretty confused, didn’t know what to do, and we weren’t alone. I found that kind of encouraging - that people would show up despite all that and show their support.

We made it in New York City… forecast called for rain and storms all day long. It was an absolutely beautiful day, 63 degrees and partly sunny, not a raindrop in sight, for the entirety of the protest.

We were really close to the front, maybe 20 feet from the podium. They had us corralled off in a pen and it was really difficult to see behind us–but you could hear this cacophony of shouts. The demonstrators at the podium said there were at least 5,000 of us. We got lots of car honks and thumbs up from the double-decker tour buses rolling through. Also, some very energizing speeches–I screamed myself hoarse for 2 hours.

Only once we left the pens did I realize how many people there were–we walked for blocks and blocks and we were all lining both sides of the street.

It was energizing, and informative, even for an old salt like me. For the first time I really got why civil unions aren’t enough. Separate can never be equal.

We didn’t see a single anti-gay marriage protester. And it resumed raining immediately following the protest. Almost as if the sky opened up just for us.

Here’s a slideshow of some things we saw.

Man, I’m completely exhausted. But after a good rest, I know I’m going to have to get out there and keep fighting until we get it done.

 …amen.
