"No Kings" rallies, Saturday June 14th 2025

This is the third (I think) in a series of nationwide organized protests against actions taken by our current president. I didn’t go to the first two, but I’m going to do my best to go to this one (I’ve got a new pain pill for my arthritic hip) here in San Francisco’s Dolores Park. It will be a good, visible counter to his “look at me” military parade that just happens to be on his birthday, and to the hubris of spending all that taxpayer money to celebrate himself (and oh, yes, incidentally, the military and the flag).

ACLU has a “know your rights” ZOOM event tomorrow evening, 7pm ET, contact them if you’re interested, to get a participation link.

See you all out there, I hope. Stop by and say Hi if you see me.

It’s farmers’ market season and my Saturdays are taken.

If there’s one in the village with the market, with the right sort of timing (basically right after I’ve packed up the stall), I’ll stop by for a bit. But I’ll have been up since five in the morning on probably about four hours’ sleep and I’ll need to drive back home before that round of caffeine wears off.

I did make it to the previous one, which was before market season. But I’ll have to try to contribute in some other fashion for a while.

I’ll actually be in Australia on that day.

I think the important bit is to completely ignore the parade, no matter what else you have to/want to do. As a lifelong atheist, I plan to listen or watch the new Pope share his message that afternoon…

I was going to say “which parade?” And then I realized that I suspect I know which parade.

My wife is taking a large American flag and a smaller Mexican flag to a freeway overpass banner hanging on Friday. On Saturday we will pick up a friend (a Doper who doesn’t post anymore) and attend the No Kings rally in Bellingham. The banner-hanger will bring her banner, and we’ll take our flags and signs.

I mentioned this in the Polls thread, but my wife and I were on the fence about the June 14 rally, because of various IRL concerns and complications. With the current events in LA though, we decided it was that much more important to attend and so we will be doing so here in Colorado. At least unlike the first of the protests we went to, it won’t be sub-freezing and snowing!

I’m going to go to the one here in Durham, NC. I’ve never been to any kind of political rally or mass protest but, as with @ParallelLines, the shit going on in LA pushed me over the edge.

I don’t anticipate any real trouble. My limited experience with Durham PD is that they are pretty chill, and this is one of the bluest areas in the country, so I doubt there will be significant counter-protestors or other agitators of that ilk. Still, taking my GoPro just in case something needs to get documented.

I’m thinking about going to the one nearest me, from 2-4. I don’t have any ideas for a clever sign.

Well, there’s loads of ideas to be had. I just haven’t chosen one.

I don’t anticipate any trouble at mine. It’s in a fairly fancy suburban city.

You can borrow my planned slogan!

Two-sider sign with one side standard “No Kings” etc. mottoes.

For the other side, I wanted to honor the fact that for a long time past the Army has been planning the original (and much less ostentatious) version of this Flag Day parade as a commemoration of its 250th year, before the orange baby inserted himself into the event:

"HAPPY 250TH, U.S. ARMY! :united_states:

DON’T YOU HATE WHEN THEY MAKE YOU “SHARE” YOUR BIRTHDAY PARTY WITH THE WHINY TODDLER?" :baby_symbol:

A more artistically skilled friend is helping with the depiction of the orange baby.

Nice! I was kinda thinking of having a sign that is a picture of Jonathan Groff as King George in Hamilton with “PROVE HIM WRONG”.

(His big song is “You’ll Be Back” about how the US will come back to the monarchy)

If I attend, my sign will be pretty succinct:

NO FASCIST DICTATORS!

Although I agree with the sentiment, many Fox News viewers would interpret that as “no more fascist Biden, let’s praise The Donald”.

I read on MSN this morning that ‘No Kings’ rallies have ‘mushroomed’ after Trump’s invasion of L.A. over the weekend.

Good. I certainly hope so.

I wonder what measure they are using, and how they know. Do they mean the number of locations planning rallies has increased? Or that the number of people expecting to participate has increased? (I looked at MSN.com news for the first time in probably ever, trying to find the story referenced, and it appears to be full of an awful lot of junk “stories”. That first impression is not likely to have me going back there a second time.)

It was a video, and I don’t watch videos for news, so I don’t know. My impression was that the number of locations has incresed.

It’s the home page on Edge. I didn’t choose it, and I can’t be arsed to change it. Yes, there are ‘junk stories’, bloody videos, and ads. But casually looking through to rest my eyes from working lets me know things that are going on, and I can look for the stories on better sites.

My family and I will be going to the protest in Holland, MI (fun fact: hometown of Betsy DeVos!).

My wife and daughter went out and bought sign materials after the Hands Off protests in April and made their signs. I haven’t had a chance to make mine yet. I’d like to do one with a picture of Trump making a ridiculous face that says "This is getting ugly "

Sad I am not surprised by this:

President Donald Trump on Tuesday threatened to forcibly put down any protests that spoil the military parade he has ordered up for his birthday on Saturday to coincide with the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Army’s founding during the American Revolutionary War.
