On Saturday Nov. 15 there will be marches and protests all across America in support of the GLBT community in light of the appallingly bigoted results in California, Arizona, Arkansas and Florida. This website will tell you where a rally will be held near you.
This isn’t a rally just for gays and lesbians. Straight people who are sickened by the bigotry need to show their support too. I’m a straight grandmother who was horrified that a majority could so easily take away the rights of a minority. I’ll be there.
There are also some international protests being held too.
In Chicago, the rally will be downtown at Federal Plaza (corner of Adams and Dearborn) at 12:30pm.
Sorry I didn’t see this before I went to bed last night.
No, it’s happening at the same time all over the country. So, here in Chicago it will be at 12:30. In Santa Barbara, CA it’s at 10:30. You don’t need to sign up with Facebook at all.
Santa Barbara County Courthouse (Sunken Gardens)
1100 Anacapa St., Santa Barbara CA
I just checked the weather and it’s going to be rainy/possibly snowy here too. All the more reason to go out and be a voice. I’ll just bundle up! I’ve already made my sign and everything.
Now see, you should have kept with the OP title format:
Y H8? Y?
Then you could have made like two and a half signs with the same amount of effort.
I wonder which Florida rally would be better to check out. The one in downtown Tampa’s a lot closer to me, but I’m actually registered to vote in St. Pete. I wonder if that makes a difference.
Actually - the way the site was directing me, I did have to have a Facebook account to view the local organizer’s page about the event. Fortunately, the bare bones were available with the slider links on the left side of the web page.
We were thinking about going, but don’t really know what to expect. In San Diego, where my brother-in-law is attending, they’re marching from one point in the city to the County buildings, but it looks like in Calgary, they’re just staying in Olympic Plaza.
I’ve never protested either, but this seems really important to me. I just wonder if I have the courage to get over my natural introversion.
I feel your pain. I am not a confrontational person. I am nervous about someone on the train on the way there trying to start shit with me when they see my signs. I just want to do my peaceful thing, you know? And I don’t want anybody to feel like they are under attack.
We’re back from the demonstration in Raleigh. It was a beautiful, warm, very windy day…until the speakers were almost finished. Then it poured. There was a pretty good turnout and people stuck around to march (to the State capital building), even in the rain. Lots of families with kids. There was one counter-protester, holding up a sign that said “Truth: marriage is between one man and one woman” and had a Bible verse (something from Corinthians, I think). She was pretty much left alone, except for the police who made her move back and some people taking pictures of her.
I just got back from San Jose. Gorgeous sunny day 70+ degrees. It was a good crowd though I’m not sure how many people there were. 1000 to 1500 I’d guess.
There was one guy who came out with “Yes on 8” and “No Gay Marriage” signs. He was surrounded (peacefully) quite quickly, and a bicycle cop was always close at hand.
You didn’t miss anything. When we got there at 11:30, the Plaza was full of the Young Canadians rehearsing for some Christmas show that started at 3:00. We wandered around and saw a couple other people who seemed as if they were looking for the rally as well, but there was no organized group.
It was very disappointing.
On the other hand, the San Diego rally apparently had somewhere around 10,000 people, which is incredible. I wish we could have been there.
My husband and I are back from the Santa Rosa rally. Gorgeous day and a really great crowd. About 2000 people I’d say, walked the six block routefrom Courthouse Square to City Hall. I didn’t expect so many people as I figured most would just head down to San Francisco.
Tons of families with kids, both gay and straight and people of all ages. A few Sisters graced us with their fabulous presence. Lots of “Thank you Sonoma County” signs as the county voted overwhelmingly against Prop 8. Lots of people with pictures of their weddings, signs with their wedding dates, etc.
A little band, so many signs, flags, dogs, people in cars waving and honking. It was nice and I’m glad we went.
