Editor’s Note: I recently saw headlines related to the “study” being debunked in the article below. I didn’t really dig in, because the whole “how much energy does the internet use?” meme has gotten a bit old and is almost always “studied” in a very narrow, less-than-useful way… with the superficial infographics that confuse more than clarify close behind. However, I wasn’t actually aware of the misinformation campaign (?) discussed below, nor the research done by Dr. Jonathan Koomey or Dr. Joe Romm. For 14 years, I (and other scientists) have been debunking a myth created by the coal industry that the Internet is an energy hog. My first debunking (coauthored with California Energy Commissioner Art Rosenfeld) dates back to December 1999, “The Internet Economy and Global Warming,” which the UK Guardian called a “seminal work.” I even testified to Congress on this not once but twice (see Senate testimony here).

In fact, not only is the Internet not an energy hog, it often saves energy through dematerialization and substitution.

Consider those movie videos you stream. You used to have to drive your car to Blockbuster to get them. Then you got DVDs in the mail. Now you get bits over the Internet. Sounds like progress. Heck, you may have noticed that transportation oil consumption in this country peaked years ago in part because Millennials weaned on the Internet and mobile devices aren’t buying cars and driving them as much as previous generations.

Keep piling the evidence that shows the ignoramus that you really are FX.

I’m only starting. That only shows what a clueless dolt you are, for example, even with no Google at all I can tell you that your example of the use of iron for geoengineering is not as simple a solution as you claim, you really are Google vomiting when you do not check what they conclude:

The ‘experiment’ that was executed by George and colleagues is primarily under fire because it was done undercover, without scientific peer review or process, and without international collaboration, yet can have global consequences. It is also the largest iron fertilization experiment to have occurred anywhere – 200,000 pounds versus a few thousand pounds. Other smaller scale international experiments over the last fifteen-plus years have concluded that the sequestering efficiency is low (and sometimes no effect was seen) – the amount of iron you’d need to make even a slight dent in our carbon emissions is in the million tons per year, and even if you put in that amount, it may just not work. Unregulated iron fertilization on this scale could have dramatic consequences and goes against an international moratoria created by the UN to protect ocean environments. Far from being a savior, this experiment is being called a large scale dumping of waste into our oceans.

So like H. L. Mencken said, that you are fond of quoting, “For every complex problem there is an answer that is clear, simple, and wrong.”

You are indeed certifiably wrong, that was not a simple solution. You are only letting all know that you are only have a simple mind rather than a master one.

What you said was that "Simple solutions are often resisted strongly by the very people that are so passionate about trying to get everyone else in the world to do something about what they see as “the problem”. "

It was not simple. What you are so happy to willfully ignore is that almost all of what you posted was already looked at, you are even wrong on your “seem”. Reinventing the wheel in the middle of the race is something that one should not be proud, particularly when it is training wheels.

Something I’ve noticed when it comes to any discussion of “global warming” here. The alarmists are insulting, crude and ignorant of the scientific basis of climate change science, where for the most part, the skeptics are reasonable and well thought out.

Yet the foul mouthed insulting members call anyone who disagrees with them “deniers” or trolls or whatever name they can come up with.

And they can’t see what they are doing.

Priceless.
