Does anyone know how accurate the setting for the submarine equipment was?

It’s been a long time since I saw DT but IIRC it was no worse technically than any other mid 1940s submarine flick.
I’d be surprised if the Navy let them film in a real submarine. The Air Force hid the cockpit of F-117’s at air shows, for example.
Did subs carry only a Pharmacist’s Mate? Why did the landing party have a lever action rifle instead of M-1?
