Film fans – How do you feel about movie awards?

Well the season of various Critics Awards, Golden Globes and a multitude of other pre-Oscar cinema awards is upon us. I’d like your general feedback/feelings about these.

Are there any award-givers you particularly respect? Disrespect? Are there any worthwhile points or purposes to these things? Are there just too many of them?

Isn’t it silly how most of them are just for movies from the second half of a year, not the whole year. How can one actor be lauded by several groups or critics, then ignored by others. (Tommy Lee Jones, perhaps?). How can a critically acclaimed movie be ignored? (Zodiac?) by some but not by all? (Eastern Promises?) Do these things make any sense at all or are they just reasons for critics/groups to get together and feel important? Is the recognition imp. to the nominated? (I would think so) or do they find it all as mystifying and meaningless as we do? The awards shows just reasons to gawk at pretty people, I know, but do the awards themselves tell us anything?

I love movies and couldn’t care less what any critic, film institute or popularity judgment is pronounced. The fact that I love movies and I also love trivia would seem like a marriage made in heaven. I should be the local *Buffalo Wild Wings * grand movie trivia champion. But I’m not. I am not good at movie trivia because they rarely ask trivia questions dealing with the actual movie. Instead of a question like, “Name one character that tries to kill Martin Blank in Grosse Point Blank?” we get, “Who won the 1978 Academy Award for best actor?”. Who the hell cares? How is that at all relevant? A POX I say! A POX on them all!

I stopped giving a shit about the Oscars after they gave a truckload of them to Titanic, a movie so bad it manages to make a big-ass sinking ship more boring than watching this thing.

I don’t watch or care about them. Just because some Joe Schmoe’s say a movie is good and give it rewards doesn’t mean the movie is somethng I am going to enjoy.
