One of my library patrons, a man in his late 80s, has asked me to help him track down a film he saw “around 50 years” ago. I’ve been unable to come up with an answer and thought I might throw it out to everyone here. The plot details (as best as he remembers them) are as follows:
An older and very wealthy woman needs to change her will, but it’s a holiday (perhaps Christmas Eve or New Year’s Eve) and so her lawyer won’t do it right away. She goes walking through a city (presumably New York) carrying her dog as she searches for a lawyer who can alter her will. She finds one, who also gives her other advice. Her original lawyer discovers he may be on the brink of losing the woman’s business, and begins to compete with the second lawyer to retain her services.
That’s about all my patron remembers. He’s pretty sure it was black and white, and that he saw it in a theater rather than TV. He doesn’t remember any of the people who starred in the movie, except that they were familiar to people during the time but probably weren’t A-Listers. He recalls the movie being fairly serious rather than a comedy.
I thought the movie might be “Christmas Eve,” from around 1949, but the patron is adamant that it is not the same movie. Does this plot sound familiar to anyone? I’ve gone through IMDB and I’ve searched about 60 years worth of movie reviews in the NY Times.
It would make this fellow’s day if someone can come up with the name of the film, as he really hopes to see it again. Thanks.
