Film processing, but no prints?

I want to get some film processed, but no prints made. I just want the negatives, to do with what I please. (Insert evil, maniacal laugh.)

Does anyone know how to go about looking for a place that does this? Does anyone know a specific place in NYC that does it? And how much it costs? We’re talking about two dozen rolls of 35mm Tri-X.

Hey, Mike, it’s your old pal stuyguy, your subway map connection. I’ve got a NYC pal in the photo processing biz. I’ll email you about him.

IIRC, Tri-X is B&W, right? In that case, if you don’t mind waiting a few days, just about any place will do it. They just send it off to Kodak labs. I used to do this all the time and it usually only cost a couple of dollars per roll.

If you need the negs immediately, you may have a problem finding a place set up to do B&W. The 1-hour photo shops deal with color 99.99% of the time, so they usually don’t bother buying the equipment to process B&W. In that case, I’d recommend going to your local camera “pro” shop. If they don’t do processing themselves, they can probably direct you to someone who can.

Incidentally, Ilford makes a B&W film that can be processed with color equipment, so you can get your prints (or just negs) done anywhere.

Maybe I should have answered the OP.

Just getting negatives is never a problem (unless you get one of the more clueless of the Teeming Millions behind the counter). Just say “just the negatives, please.”

or, since it’s black & white, you could just buy the chemistry and do it yourself. (for two dozen rolls, you’d save some cash)

That’s a good point, and I would like to do that, but since I have to work full time I have neither the time nor the energy to go sloshing chemicals around in my bathroom, like the good ol’ days. Thanks for the suggestions so far.

PS: stuyguy: got your mail. Will be responding post haste.
