Filming at dusk/dawn/night

Once again, watching a movie brings a question to mind.

Tora! Tora! Tora! (1970) is on. The Japanese planes have just taken off from their aircraft carriers to head toward Pearl Harbor. I’m struck by how the filming of the first planes taking off was clearly done at dawn, as opposed to the cheesy dark-filter-over-the-camera-lens, let’s pretend it’s twilight/night time effect I seem to remember from various TV shows in the 70s.

Were there any earlier films with scenes shot at times other than broad daylight? Were there technical issues that required filming with a dark filter later than 1970, or was it more of a budget constraint?
