I;ve been thinking about getting back into FF11 online, but I’ve been wondering something. I only have the basic game and Rise of the Zilart. Do I need the two new expansions to play?
Second, last time I ran into an irritating issue with partying. How can I best find good parties in FF11? Any good guilds out there?
Lastly, assuming the previous two questions go through all right, which class is the easiest to level up to 20 or so with (to get the sub-class ability. Last time I had a terrible time with my poor Mithra Thief. I liked playing a thief. I just kept getting pasted due to incompetant White Mages.
You can definitely live without Treasures of Aht Urhgan for now, but you will probably need to get Chains of Promathia. ToAU content isn’t really recommended for players under 50-60, given that mobs can still aggro 75s. CoP, on the other hand, has content for players at 30, which you can reach pretty quickly.
I can’t tell you how to find good parties or linkshells-- in my experience, good chemistry just happens. The best advice I can give you is when you party, be good at your job, and make note of who is good at their job. If you really enjoy playing with people, tell them so, and remember their names. Be open to starting your own parties, and when you do, keep an eye out for those skilled players. You’ll do yourself many favors by making friends and grinding with competent players.
As for finding linkshell, many recruit by shouting in towns. You can also try asking players for linkpearls-- that’s how we found at least 3 members of my current linkshell.
Based on your thief, I assume you’re going the melee route. I personally would level warrior to 18. I soloed all my jobs to 15-18, and I found warrior much easier to play and get party invites with than thief.

But I can just install what I have and start playing now, adding new programs later, right?
Thanks. I got very unhappy with the constantly having to play the meatshield. Thief does not make a good meatshield. But the fighters kept getting themselves killed (because the White Mages were… pathetic, to be kind). And I wound up doing an awful lot of jumping in front and desperately trying to keep aggro.
Every now and then, the white mage would go psycho and run around in front of all the enemies. In such instances, I would run up, take the aggro, and essentially be a sacrifice piece. Unfortunately, the other players were consistantly too dull to recognize that when 20 Yagudo aggro on the WM, it was time to cut and run while the thief bought 15 seconds with her 2-hours ability.
Would monk be about as easy? I;m fine with playing a spellcaster, but I’d like to get up to a second job quickly.
Valefor. But I don’t really have any friends there. I was playing a few years ago.
Yeah, I was going to suggest monk as well. Both warrior and monk are acceptable subjobs for thief. I never used either for a thief sub, though, just ranger.
Cool. I’m on Ramuh, and have played since the PS2 release.
I’m currently trying to find out what my credit card was at Christmas '03. Apparently, the geniuses at Squaresoft decided not to accept any other security information. So unless I can get a back statement from my bank (50/50 shot, and it’s costing me five bucks and 3-5 days), I won’t be able to get back on.
I’m having trouble deciding what race to be. I want to experiment with a lot of jobs. But I can’t quite figure out of the Mithra stat bonuses/penaklties make any difference compared to Hume stats. They seem to be quite similar, except the Mithra are slightly lower in Str and Vit and much higher in Dex and Agi. Well, they’re also lower in Cha, but that’s rarely useful.
You bring back such sweet memories. A few years back I was a hume 52 redmage/41 blackmage. I believe I was the oldest true female playing on the Midgardsormer server…or maybe on any of them.
I remember all those places I went and all the adventures I had as vividly as if they were real life experiences. No other game I’ve tried has been as immersive and had environments as imaginative as FFXI. The music really was a huge part of the emotional resonance.
But I still can’t believe I spent so many hundreds of realtime hours “fishing” for a virtual living.
