Anybody playing this game? I found it over the weekend and love it. I was first introduced to MMORPGs with WOW. I loved the game and played it for 6 years (ended my sub last Aug.). I had found I was bored with it as the endless grind for gear had ceased keeping me entertained. I never was into PvP and have always gravitated to PvE.
Over the weekend I got bored and decided to try and find a new game to play. I found FFXIV. It is strictly PvE, the interface if nice (no problem finding/completing quests), and you only need one toon. You can of course have more than one toon, but you don’t need to. There aren’t any racial bonuses with the various races and every race can place every class, and multiple classes. I plan on getting level 50 on all classes on a single toon. To swtich classes/gear is just a click of a button (out of combat, of course). Also, the story is pretty compelling as well.
I wanted to see if anybody else on SDMB was playing it, and if so what were their impressions of the game. Like I said, I am really new and would appreciate the input of anyone who has been playing it a while since I am sure there is a lot I am missing as n00b.
What’s the style? Is it standard Final Fantasy turn-based combat, or something a bit more organic? I’ve been looking for something new to play when I finished Dark Souls 2, and a PvE-focused MMPORPG sounds interesting enough.
We had a (short) discussion on it a few weeks ago. My sub runs out May 2, I’m not renewing.
It’s a MMO, it plays like any other theme-park MMO out there.
Which is my main problem with it. There isn’t much that’s really, really, wrong about it, some QoL stuff that mainly seem to be a result of the fact that the game is shared between PS3/4 players and PC players (smaller zones, menu selections instead of point and click interfaces for travel, etc), but there’s just not that much right about it either.
The first launch attempt for Final Fantasy 14 was a complete disaster, so it really does feel like someone said “Hey, we need to re-write this game from the ground up, all in about 6 months or so. So let’s just quickly put basic MMO 101 together and slap chocobo skins on the mounts for fan service”
The only complaint I have with the combat is the 2.5s GC. There are several moves that are off the GC, but they tend to be the weaker moves you have, and have a considerable cooldown on their own (at least as a lancer). With the weaker moves off the GC though it does seem that I almost always have attacks I can throw without having to rely on auto-attack.
I agree with dzeiger that there is room for improvement, and I am hoping these issues get addressed in patches/updates, but if you are like me and just got bored with WoW after several years of the seemingly same thing then this may be a nice change of pace for you.
The standard digital download only ran me $29 and the low end sub is only $12.99 a month. That limits you to one toon pers server, but as I said before one toon can play all classes. If you want more toons per server (8 per server - 40 total max) it is the standard $14.99 a month.
One thing to keep in mind–if the reason you’re tired of WoW is the grind, a Final Fantasy game in general may not be a long-term solution…
Endgame, it’s much like WoW or other MMOs, run the same instances over and over again for marginal increases in gear.
Also, while the idea of just being able to level all classes on one character and not having to have alts is a good one, in practice there’s a problem in that all those quests you’re doing now aren’t ever going to be there again. So any subsequent classes you level will have to be ground out.
