Finally Baseball is here! 2009 Edition, (April thread)

If it were held next week? Slim - Greinke would get the start.
Edit: That’s the second time I’ve done that today…

Good point  I’ve actually got him on my currently-in-1st-place fantasy team. I’d never heard of him when he wound up on my team (I play on Yahoo! and use the auto-draft, rather than pick my own players).

Getaway day games afte a night game are often crazy games. Still, nothing better than coming home from work to see a 10-0 D-backs beat up on on the Cubs. D-backs take the series and send away all those Cubs fans with an L for their lovable losers. I’ll tell them what they can do with their billy goat!

Well. The Cards have the best record in baseball, having taken 2 of 3 from Atlanta in spite of hitting .206 as a team for the series and having several players play with the flu. The Cards now get four games against the Nats while the Cubs have to face the Marlins, the Brewers face Arizona, and the Reds and Pirates beat up on each other. Good opportunity for the Cards to stretch their lead.

Brendan Ryan and Khalil Greene are now both on the DL, so the Cards have to dip in to AAA for a shortstop (Tyler Greene). It’s just not a good year to be a Cardinals infielder.

Winning April for the Royals! Hooray!

I’d just like to blow a loud, wet raspberry at—not the Cubs fans (the poor things)—but the silly sportswriters who were saying before the season even started that the Cubs had the pennant practically sown up (and the Cardinals were going to finish somewhere in the middle). Thank the baseball gods, it takes more than big names, big salaries, and a sense of entitlement to win ball games.

This might deserve its own thread, but this article claims that Alex Rodriguez tipped pitches to opposing players late in blowout games. The allegation is that Rodriguez would indicate by his mannerisms what pitch was coming, to help out pals on other teams when the outcome of the game was no longer in doubt. The other players would return the favor to Rodriguez in other games.

Even though I kind of dislike Rodriguez, this doesn’t sound all that plausible to me. It just sounds like unverifiable character assassination. Could this network of players tipping pitches to each other really go on for several seasons without management on at leat one team getting wind of it and doing a favor for their pals by calling them up and letting them know what was up? I’m not saying I refuse to believe it. I’m just skeptical.

The Washington Nationals have now become the Washington Generals. Seriously, take a look at the hideous uniforms they’re wearing tonight. A beer league softball team would be embarrassed to wear those. They’re worse than those stupid throwback uniforms the NFL makes teams wear.

I’ll try to find a pic online, but they’re blue short sleeve shirts with DC in big letters on the right chest pocket. The DC is in USA flag colors. The player’s number is on the the left chest area. They’re wearing red shirts underneath, red caps, and white pants!

And yet, the Cardinals are not dismantling them. Nats are up 4-3 in the 7th. The hell?

I agree. I don’t like him either, but this is another level if true. I will have to see some proof before I believe it.

So we’ve lost 6 or 7 games in the 9th inning, some more in the 8th inning, and the thing you choose to highlight is the uniforms?

Weak shit, dude. Weak, weak shit dude.

Seriously man, Julian “Batshit” Tavarez is our closer. We’re throwing the ball over the damn field. Uniforms? Please. And you didn’t even send a call back to our missing "O"s last week. (Best comment on that by the way was the suggestion that we bring those uniforms back when we play the Orioles in interleague.)

(Also, Arizona has nothing to be proud of here. We at least play in a real division. You play in the NL West. And the only reason you’re not last in that “division” is because the Rockies are half a game behind you.)

This is going to settle down. The offense is a million times better, we’re infinitely healthier than last year, our starting pitching has settled, we’ll somehow get some bullpen help. This is just gonna be very, very painful for a while.

Oh, a note to my AL team - Josh Beckett. Please stop sucking. Thank you. (And for god’s sake, stop infecting Jon Lester with the suck please.) 13-0 is really very embarrassing, even if it is to the Rays (said with remembered irony.)

Oooh.
I was listening to last night’s game on the radio, and when I heard the name “Kip Wells,” I thought, Oh yeah, I had forgotten about that guy. Blocked him out of my memory. Repressed the thought of the suck he brought to the 2007 Cardinals.

A-Rod the bad press magnet will be back soon and the Yanks look OK in the meantime. Teix and CC still need to start doing their thing. Wang needs to recover and we could use Brian Bruney back. The guy is great, but I have to say he is very injury prone.

May thread here.
