Finding a job in a place where you don't live (yet)

So, I’m wanting to move to Las Vegas in June. And I’d want to have a job lined up for me before I get there.

Question is, what is the best way to get the job before I arrive? It’s tricky when I’m far away.

I am planning at least one trip there in mid February.

Any pointers? Especially if you have successfully gotten a job in a place that’s far away (air travel required) from where you lived before.

Do some research, identify firms or businesses in Vegas that would employee ppl with your skill and start marketing yourself with resumes and cover letters. See if you can do some interviews while you are in town in February. If you are not going till June, that may be too early for some firms to make an offer, but at least you’ll be able to get some preliminary stuff out of the way.

No pointers, just curious … Have you actually spent time in Lost Wages? I mean shopping in grocery and clothing stores, driving through the outlying areas, trying to get down to the store in less than one or two millieniums?

Are you an entertainer? If you’re not in the entertainment buiseness, your’re going to have a tough time competing with all who are willing to work for minimum wages … have you checked out how much you’re gonna have to shell out just to make basic living expenses?

I guess what I’m really asking here is: Why in God’s name would you want to move into the most horribly crowded city in Nevada? If it’s for some perceived glory or high wages, you’re probably barking up the wrong tree …

There are people on the board who live in Las Vegas, and might know of businesses hiring. So, what do you do?

Hmmm, I do have to question why you’re going to Vegas in the first place…

It really isn’t that great of an area, and unless you’re an entertainer (like LucyInDisguise said) you’re going to have a tough time. Nevermind that the place just wears on you. If its not the heat, its the traffic, if its not that, its the crime, and high cost of living. It will probably be all of that together.

My mom lives there (she’s a teacher) and hates it, seriously, everything there costs double than what it would anywhere else.

I don’t mean to be an ass or anything, after living there, I just have to wonder. It really is just God awful.

As for getting a job, I don’t know what to say about that. I’ve never had any luck finding a job before moving to a place, but luckily I’ve always had a place to crash while I looked for one once I got there. Do you know anybody that could help you out in that way?
