I’m trying to find a website but I don’t know its name. It’s a one-person operation but I don’t feel comfortable calling and asking him because he’s a competitor of mine. I DO know a likely keyword that he would probably have used in its name, however. Googling such terms as “find website keyword” gets lots of hits as to how to use keywords to best advantage in order for the search engines to find YOUR website, but none seem to have the search function I need. One Google hit that sounded like I SHOULD be able to search on any given keyword came up with zero hits when I input the word. But then, it also came up with zero hits when I used the word “sex” as the keyword, so go figure. Surely, this capability exists somewhere?
I feel like I’m missing something here, but why are you using Google to find a search engine? Why not just search with Google?
I’m with Catalyst. Just Google for <keyword> and see what you get.
Do what Joe Random says. If you google for “find website keyword” you are looking for info on “find,” “website,” and “keyword,” probably not what you want. And put the most significant word in the first location.
Also just try “www.” + possible spellings of the name, or just “http://” + name (in your browser’s URL line, not google).
Well, for one thing, the <keyword> is common enough that I get (koff) a google of hits, and the keyword by itself is not his site, so (probably) his site name would be the keyword combined with other words or letters. There are <associated> words that could logically be combined with the <keyword> but if I Google <keyword><associated> (no space, as it would be in a URL) I get “Did you mean to search for <keyword>_<associated>?” (with space.)
Said another way, I need a search engine that will find (for example) all the sites that have names
"???<keyword>???.com (or .whatever), kind of like a wildcard search where I don’t know how many ?'s there are or where they are positioned, I just know/suspect that <keyword> is somewhere in the string. Does this make it clearer? Is there a way to set up Google to do this that I don’t know about?
DUH! Well, it looks like Googling <keyword> may do it but I still get a bunch of hits. Had nothing better to do tonight anyway.
Try this site. Just search on <keyword> without any wildcard characters.
If I understand correctly, you want to search for this site via a keyword in the url. You can use google for this too by using the “allinurl” modifier. In the search box, enter
allinurl:<keyword>
For instance, to search for sites with “straightdope” in the url, just enter
[allinurl:straightdope](http://www.google.com/search?&q=allinurl:straightdope)
.
Have you ever considered using Google to search for your competitor’s name?
You can also try the name of his company together with the keywords. Or maybe location. Or maybe the product(s) and/or services he sells.
Since we are kind of on the subject, here’s a site that surmises how Google actually “ranks” sites.
Or, in other words, if you want to get your site listed “higher” in the Google search, do this:
