finding lost icon

I bought a new computer with Windows 7 a week or so ago. When I first got it there was a small icon in the task bar where I could print off information etc. from a site; for some reason it is no longer there and I can’t seem to find out how to print. I was on a site for instructions, since the instructions are impossibe for me to remember step by step, I wanted to print them,(the site was free).

Does any doper have the answer for me? How do I go about finding where the printer icon went. I noticed this on a lot of sites that used to have a icon for printing.

Thanks.

Are you definitely talking about the bar that is usually at the bottom of the screen that shows all your running applications? As far as I can tell, there is no print button on it that comes with Windows 7. So it either was software that came with your computer, or you are using the wrong terminology.

If you are using the correct terminology, then we’d need to know your computer brand, as it this was probably installed by them. If you are not, then I suggest you use less computery terms to describe it.

For example, you aren’t talking about the Print button in Internet Explorer’s toolbar, are you? That’s nearer to the top of the screen. In that case, try right-clicking on one of the toolbars that is up there, and try the menu options.

I’m thinking the same thing as BigT. Either you’re talking about a third party application or using the wrong terminology or, well, doesn’t really matter. If you just want to print some information off a website, just pull the website up, go to file, Print and click ok on the box that comes up.
If you only want to print some of the info, highlight what you want, click File, Print then in the box that comes up, change it from ALL to SELECTION and click ok.

Now that I think about it, I’m going to guess, your printer had it’s own application in your system tray. I’ve seen them do that. Honestly, those applications usually just end up complicating things, as you can see.

But both of those icons (just like any other version of Windows) would get you into Printer settings. How would that help the OP?

Yes, I am talking about the print button on the top of the page.

I have a Compaq Presario made by HP.

I was on a site for how to fix any thing. I also print off the news for my husband from his home town, but since the button is gone I can’t seem to find where it went! Or why!

Thank you all for your help,

Ahhh, that’s the toolbar (the taskbar is at the bottom). Try right clicking (next to the tabs), go to customize, then hit “add or remove commands” and you should be able to add it back.

Re-reading this, what you might want to do is first click on View, then Toolbars and make sure “command bar” is checked. I’m thinking you somehow unchecked it.

Also, hitting the print button is just a shortcut for: File, Print, OK.

Hello again,

I checked with Explorer and there is no button for the printer; It brings up my home page or MSNBC page neither have a print button.

What version of Internet Explorer did you use to attain those results? IE8, right? If you need to, go to IE8’s “Help” drop-down to view the “about” thing. A pop-up will tell ya what version (though I presume IE8 is fairly standard on Win7).

On my IE8, when I right-click on the ‘line’ to right of word ‘help’ the menu pops up and then I go to “Customize” then go to “Add or Remove Commands” and click/open that part. You should get a pop-up with lots of choices of ‘icons’ (representing commands for your system, so to speak) and two of those choices, at least, should have the word ‘print’ in them - one says “print” and other says “Print Preview” or very similar wordings/icons. If/when you ‘add/choose’ them, they show up upon the toolbar area of IE8…for me, those icons are just to the right of the actual tabs that are open (if multiple tabs are open, that is).

Do you show anything in that area of your IE8? Maybe a little pic of a house that represents your homepage? The print button(s) should show up in that general area. I presume that you need to have an actual printer set-up/installed for that button/icon to do anything, and cannot really say more than that without knowing more of your system/set-up. Hang on … just re-read the quoted part, and looks like you know where the ‘house’ icon is. Great! - so go add the one or two “Print” icons you want as I described, and let us know (please).

I think (and others answering this as well) that you simply need to add the proper icon that somehow disappeared. It is easy to do by finding/choosing the “Add or remove commands” and using the Add arrow to move icon to proper side of the pop-up. Hope I make sense in this - its is kinda easy once you get to proper pop-up thingy. FWIW, I have had my ‘command icons’ get messed up in the past by installing progs that do their own thing with add/remove command icons (like change homepage, etc, so maybe an install made the print icon go away?? shrugs…)

ETA: I am merely re-wording what JoeyP already said, fwiw

Thanks to all who responded! By accident I right clicked on the page and was then able to print it!
