Finial, aglet and grommet conversation split from the Trolls R Us Thread

The other day I was blocking on the decorative piece on top of a post or flagpole. So I googled “decorative piece on top post or flagpole” and hit enter. Yes, finial is the word.

It happens disturbingly often lately. Then again, I’m older and consume more alcohol and cannabis than most.

Today I learned there’s a name for the decorative piece on top of a post or flagpole.

Now you must research the three mysterious objects they contain on military flag poles!

Just wait until you learn about aglets

Ah. Good tip.

Or aiguillettes

Their true purpose is sinister - The Question

Did you know you can buy a device that makes aglets for you?
And, did you further know, there’s not enough money in the world to buy the shoestrings you need to put through those aglets, you could possibly place?
One bag of aglets contained 5000. The small bag. Cheap as dirt.

I love that tool. Used it once for 2 aglets. 9 years ago.

( I also have a tool to make the ends of shoestrings, or is that the aglet, that goes on thru the eyelet? I always get that confused)

Is that your finial answer?

I had one. I used it make the holes for the drawstring in a suede vestlet that was part of a RenFaire costume I made a billion years. Never used it again either.

Um, the aglet is the tip of the shoelace. Are you thinking of a grommet?

But not this Grommet (click box to open).

Yeah I did. I have both tools.

If I ever happen to be driving by your homestead and find myself lacking in laces, I’ll email you.

Cheers!

I’ll help you out. I’m nice like that.

I meant “grommet.” but I had aglets on the cord I used to lace it with!

A rather pointless slight return: TIL that the decorative bit on the end of a curtain rail is also called a finial.

Press on.

So is the knob on top of a lamp shade.

Which usually attaches the shade to another part of the lamp whose name is often forgotten:
