A while back, a friend and I played Myst 3 together and had lots of fun. Now that its summer, we have some free time on our hands again and are looking for a new game to play. Any ideas?
Some guidelines:
I get motion sickness from 1st person shooters-type games. (I even got a little sick playing Myst.) Unfortunately this eliminates many, many games.
We are looking for something that requires brain power-- problems that we can solve together-- and a sort of role-play/adventure feel to it.
Some sort of murder mystery/detective theme is what I have in mind, but I am open to other suggestions.
My friend is a fan of British culture, so something with a British element would be nice for her.
We will be playing on a HP Pentium4 laptop (fairly new) running Windows XP.
Thanks in advance and sorry if its in the wrong forum. It’s sortof mundane-entertainment-opinion poll, so I wasn’t sure where to put it.
If you want to try a text-based game online, check out “Hitchiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” - go to douglasadams.com and follow the links under collected works.
Also try “Starship Titanic” by DNA.
Other suggestions might be “Amber, Journeys Beyond” or “Lighthouse”.
For something music-themed, try “Xplora” or “Eve” from Peter Gabriel.
My recent thing has been to dig into my old games and see what’ll run under XP. Most of this stuff is probably out of print, but I grew up on the Kings-Quest-style thinking games, so I sympathize.
So far all I’ve tried is Grim Fandango by LucasArts, and it runs fine (the only bugs I attribute to my graphics hardware, rather than XP). Next I’m gonna try The Space Quest Anthology
If you like adventure games(Grim Fandango, etc.) check out The Longest Journey. It’s probably the best adventure game released in years. The Monkey Island series is also pretty silly and fun.
If you like RPG style games, give Planescape: Torment a try. It’s got a great plot, but isn’t quite as puzzle-based as Myst or games like that.
I’ll second Grim Fandango. It’s a great game - the story is fresh and interesting, the graphics are unique, and the voices are funny and well done. There’s also quite a bit of puzzles in it.
As for the hardware requirements, it ran fine on my old P3 450mhz, with a STB Velocity 4400 (RIVA TNT drivers…), so you should be fine.
Another plus is that you can probably get it for cheap, since it’s been out for a couple of years.
