If anyone has anymore of Finland being badass in the face of Russia’s threats, please send it to me. Examples being today when a admiral tweeted and I fucking quote “You are welcome here to join the 200,000 Russians that are already in Finland buried a few meters in the ground after your last attempt”.
Welcome to the Straight Dope. I moved the thread from P&E to IMHO as it seems like a better fit.
P&E is more about Politicians and Elections. IMHO is just looking for opinions.
As to your question, isn’t Finland the nation that invented the idea of Ski Ski Ski and shoot a Russian invader at long range.
Finnish quote during the last war with Russia:
So many invaders, and our nation is so small, where will we find room to bury them all?
The Finns have always been badass:
I say again, the Finns have always been badass:
They do not just produce reindeer milk and weird vodkas. Do…not…fuck…with…Finland.
Stranger
For the record, this was not “today.” The quote in question is generally attributed, possibly apocryphally, to a Finnish officer back in the 1970s.
They’re not Rus, they’re not Scandinavian. They’re ice people who can become snow pretty much at will. Also, cloudberry liqueur. If you don’t understand Finns, you mess with them.
The Finns invented the Molotov cocktail. It wasn’t named for Molotov, but because of Molotov. From Wikipedia:
The name “Molotov cocktail” was coined by the Finns during the Winter War (Finnish: Molotovin cocktail). The name was a pejorative reference to Soviet foreign minister Vyacheslav Molotov, who was one of the architects of the Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact signed in late August 1939.
The name’s origin came from the propaganda Molotov produced during the Winter War, mainly his declaration on Soviet state radio that incendiary bombing missions over Finland were actually airborne humanitarian food deliveries for their starving neighbours. As a result, the Finns sarcastically dubbed the Soviet incendiary cluster bombs “Molotov bread baskets” (Finnish: Molotovin leipäkoreiksi) in reference to Molotov’s propaganda broadcasts. When the hand-held bottle firebomb was developed to attack and destroy Soviet tanks, the Finns called it the “Molotov cocktail”, as “a drink to go with his food parcels”.
The Finns may still be pissed off at Russia over having lost territory to the Soviet Union during WWII, then having to pay reparations to the Soviets after the end of the conflict due to Finnish participation in the Continuation War alongside the Germans (they did wind up fighting Germany later on during the Lapland War).
It’s not entirely impossible to contemplate Finland turning against NATO at some point if it suits them.
Sure. If NATO either invades Finland or turn into nazis … but by that standard there is little that is impossible.
Thank you. That is fascinating.
Wasn’t one of the requirements of the USSR that the Finns get the German army out of Finland?
Yes. And they did that with very few real fight, basically the German division retreated to Norway while being chased at a slow pace by the Finns and stayed there until may 45. the advantage for the Russians was the availability of some divisions that were previously bogged in the Finnish marsh and forest.
