Fiona Apple (new album)

I’ve been a fan since her first 2 albums in 1990’s, lyrics, music, performance – the full package. And, also, those crazy, psychotic videos from the 1990’ – they are strangest+sexiest videos of all time (for me). Then, mid-2000’s she had another two albums, a real albums that you can listen from 1st to last song and enjoy it. Now, new album is coming up and I bought tickets to see her as soon as it was announced. She was in Austin, TX SSW festival and YouTube has those live videos.

Lyrics such as these for Extraordinary Machine are finest piece of rock writing:

If there was a better way to go then it would find me
I can’t help it, the road just rolls out behind me
Be kind to me
Or treat me mean
I’ll make the most of it
I’m an extraordinary machine

Her new album is coming out in June. New album title “The Idler Wheel Is Wiser Than The Driver of The Screw And Whipping Cords Will Serve You More Than Ropes Will Ever Do” carries more meaning than heap of songs currently on Top charts.

I think she’s top 1% of quality fresh music that you can find nowadays but I have a difficulty finding similar people around me. So, I was wondering what’s Dope on Fiona - any fans?

My wife and I both love Fiona and were able to nab tickets to see her here in Chicago in June. She tours so rarely that this should be a great treat.

This will by my 3rd time seeing her. Saw her on the Extraordinary Machine tour, which was great, and also when she toured with Nickel Creek - which was a lot of fun because they acted as her backing band and she did bluegrass arrangements of a bunch of songs (Bluegrass version “Criminal” from YouTube).

Have you heard the new single she’s released streaming for free recently? It’s very good.

Please, tell me you have some secret special super-fans only disc that was released in the 00s, because AFAIK Ms. Apple has only made three albums so far. Well, four including Idler Wheel et al.

WXPN in Philly has been playing Every Single Night from the new disc pretty heavily, and it has definitely whetted my appetite for the whole album.

If you haven’t heard her amazing cover of Elvis Costello’s “I Want You” (with Elvis on guitar), you must. Afterwards, Elvis said that she owns that song now. It gives me shivers every time I hear it.

@Bob Yes, I heard it - she performed it at SXSW. I’m a fan of her FB page so you get all the news right away. And, yes, I heard that Costello cover. Funny thing, I also got a hold of recent Buddy Holy tribute cover album via The Black Keys as they did a cover. When I went to see who else is there - well, of course Fiona did a cover of Everyday.

@JohnM - Extraordinary Machine is 00’s. That’s the one that was shelved and then fans went crazy

Live @ SNL '99 Perfection!

Right, I was referring to this line in your OP: “Then, mid-2000’s she had another two albums”. I was hoping you had the super secret, uber-fans only followup to Machine.

Yeah, I like her husky emotional singing.

Big fan here. Love all her music. I saw her live in 2000 from the first row. I like the John Brion version of Extraordinary Machine so much better than the one that was released. Can’t wait for her new one.

I dont know if you heard but Fiona is in the news for a very interesting (to me, of course) dynamic that developed after she was arrested by Texas Border Patrol.

Let’s put aside the fact that they found ONLY 0.01 lb of marijuana and 0.01 lb of hashish and also let’s put aside why would Texas Border Patrol with sniffing dog be even remotely interested in Homeland risk presented by Fiona’s tour bus.

What happened afterwards was that Fiona apparently made some veiled comments about that night and police behaviour at the next show in Houston to which unfazed Texas police officer responded with the following retort that must be the lamest ever:

From the comments I realized that his claim to fame was that in 2008 he was on CNN’s Glenn Beck show.

Bizarro-USA :o
