Firefly: The Beginning of the End?

Well, it looks like FOX is one step closer to cancelling this show (cite) :(. It is (was?) intelligent, witty, with strong characterization and a premise that hasn’t been run into the ground by dozens of other shows. I guess it was a miracle it made it to the air in the first place.

I know it’s only on hiatus, but usually that means corporate meddling to “fix” it. Shows that have undergone this process are usually shadows of their former selves and almost never survive the whole creatively bankrupt process in the first place.

Or, maybe I’m being too cynical and they’ll throw their support behind it give it the promotion and time slot it deserves. Like they did with Futurama

Grr. Argh.

2nd Berman. 2nd complete destruction of a science fiction show.

Conclusion: all Bermans are evil.

Don’t they understand yet, Friday kills genre shows…

Wasn’t Dark Angel proof enough of that? Maybe when it does come back, it’ll have a happier timeslot, like Wedensday at 9 (picking up Enterprize viewers), Sunday at 9 (old X-Files timeslot), even Monday at 9 (what the hell comes on Mondays at 9 anyway?)

I mean, its not like Fox doesn’t have plenty of timeslots open.

No, no, no! The Beginning of the End was grasshoppers, not fireflies!

What’s that? Oh. Never mind.

Who is a second Berman?

Gail Berman, FOX President of Entertainment. She was the one quoted in the article.

Maybe all Bermans are evil.
Goofy, at the least.

I don’t think FOX understands that the fact that The X-Files was popular despite it’s early Friday slot was a complete fluke. I also think that FOX is run by O[sub]2[/sub] deprived monkeys because they keep whining in all these articles about about how the “lost” their anchor shows, X-Files and Ally McBeal, so it’s been a shaky season. Lost my ass, they axed the fucking things!!! I’m sorry, I’m a little bitter <twitch, twitch>

Anyway, despite not really liking the first two episodes of Firefly I stuck with it, and it has grown on me. I’ll be sorry to see it go, if they presist in running it into the ground like they did Dark Angel and Passadena last season by condeming them to Friday night oblivion. Friday is where good shows go to die.

Someone should tell FOX that young, intelligent people like to spend Friday nights hanging out with their friends.

And that even people who like science fiction have friends.

Why do people pretend there are no VCRs in these circustances?

VCR’s are a hassle. People use them to ensure they’ll see shows they already like. If a new show starts on Friday, few will trouble themselves to record it.

Well, this surprises me not at all.

Thanks FOX. For a second, I was actually excited about watching a show on TV again. You’ve cured me of that, though.

Don’t worry, I’m sure FireFly will be on either USA or the WB soon enough…

Strange. I recently read on Dark Horizons that Joss Whedon left the planned Iron Man movie project to focus on his other projects, specifically, Firefly. Seems odd he’d abandon a movie to work on the show, if it were truly dying/dead…

Third time through the thread and I just got this.

By the way, I don’t think this is the Beginning of the End. I don’t think we ever got a Beginning of the Beginning. I think FOX botched this whole thing from the get-go.

You think Sci-Fi would ever pick up this show?

Presumably with Angel moving to Wednesdays FOX won’t be parking Firefly there. I’d love to see it on Monday nights but it’s such a jarring transition from Boston Public that I don’t think it would do the show any favors. Tuesday’s most likely out because of Buffy. That leaves Sunday (X-Files old timeslot), Thursday or Saturday.

In other words, the show is doomed on FOX. Let us all keep our fingers crossed that another network snaps it up.

I’d like to see them bring back Brimstone.
