So, when I first got my computer last August, it had Vista on it. Long story short: hated it, changed to Ubuntu for about six months, then got tired of that, wanted to install XP with my old CDs, couldn’t, so I reinstalled Vista.
I’ve been using Vista now for a month, and it’s working great. However, one of the problems I had before hasn’t been fixed. At least once a day, firefox shuts down in one of two ways. The first is that it just closes without a hint as to why. If I open it again, all of the tabs reload and there’s no problem . It’s just a hassle. The second way is that it goes gray and gives me a box that says “Firefox has stopped working.” It sends the crash report and then gets me to close the program. When I open it, just like the first instance, all of the tabs load fine.
It’s all a hassle.
Oh, and 90% of the time, this all happens when I send an email using from my yahoo account, but not always.
You’re not using AVG with Linkscanner activated, are you? That has a history of crashing FF in just the way you describe. If you are, disable it in Firefox Addons; that way AVG won’t constantly bug you to turn it back on, which it does if you disable it via the AVG Control Panel.
You can set AVG to ignore errors and warnings of any or all of the six components by going into the Advanced settings… under Tools and checking the appropriate box/es under Ignore faulty conditions.
I’m using 3.0, but it did it in the 2.x versions as well.
I’ve googled the problem, and there are others who have similar problems, but none of the ones I found had been resolved. The closest thing I found to the same problem as mine was someone who said that whenever they posted things to message boards like this, it closed immediately. It sounded exactly like when I send an email. First, it shuts down, then I reopen and it sends fine.
One time, something popped up that led me to believe that Vista was actually shutting Firefox down because some script or something-or-other that firefox was running had flagged it as a security problem. I was incredibly busy at the time, and figured the message box would come up again, and I could do what it told me to then, but it hasn’t come up since. It told me to do maybe there was something in my system configuration that was causing it.
If I remember correctly, it said go into System Properties → Advanced → Performance → settings → Data Execution Memory. Then, I assume, I could turn off DEP for Firefox? Do you think this might work?
