FireFox link hover preview on the status bar

Sorry the title is so vague—I have no idea what it’s called (and therefore my Google searches have been fruitless).
I recently upgraded FF from 3.6 to 9. I’ve gotten most things set up, but one thing is really bothering me. In the earlier version, when I hovered over a link the target URL would show up in the lower left side of the status bar on the bottom of the screen. Very handy for deciding if I wanted to follow a link.

Now, instead of being embedded within the status bar, it sits on top of the bar. That’s not so bad … but if I also have the search bar active it now appears on the* right-hand side*. This is infuriating. Not only will it take years to get used to reflexively looking at the lower left of my screen, where I look depends on whether I left the search bar open. Yarrrrghhh!

Does this bother anyone else? Did I muck up the installation? Is there an easy about:config fix? An add-on? Anything?

Status bar? Since Firefox 4 the status bar is hidden by default, or has been on mine,

See, that’s part of my problem–terminology.

The grey bar at the bottom of the screen. Now I’ve an “add-on” bar and at least 50 percent of the time the search bar.

I don’t care how it displays (on a bar, popping up), I care where it displays. The shifting back and forth based on whether the search bar is active is IE-worthy. There is no additional real estate, it’s just on the right instead of the expected left.

ETA: Oh, and while I’m at it, any idea how to conserve space at the top? I have the Web page title bar (mostly empty space to the right), the menu bar (again, mostly empty space to the right), the URL/Google bar (plenty of empty space between the two), then the quicklinks and then tabs.

I’m pretty sure in previous versions I could overlay some of the more spacious bars on top of each other–so that the menu options were on the same line as the URL space. Can that be done in FF 9?

Mozilla is simply doing what Chrome does. The original idea was to put the url in the address bar, but, at the last minute, they decided to copy Chrome instead. It’s only supposed to move from the left to the right if it gets in the way of the mouse.

But, anyways, if you’re actually using the addon bar, you’ll probably want to use the addon Status-4-Evar which will put the status back on the addon bar, keeping it in one location at all times.

As for giving you more space at the top: Turn off the menu bar and turn on tabs on top. You can find these options by right clicking on the tab bar or menu bar. The result of this option menu bar will collapse into a single button that has the most widely used features, and the tabs will be right beside it (when you are using full screen). Here’s a screenshot of what it should look like when you are done.

If you desire even more space, press F11 for full screen mode, and your whole screen will be used for the page. Your top bars will autohide, so move your mouse to the top of the screen to make them come back.
