@#*($&# Firefox

So I’ve been using Firefox v3.something forever now with no issues whatsoever. You’d get a notice once in a while that your version was “not up to date!!!” but it was easy to ignore. Now they’ve been hijacking every new session with a warning that says “UPGRADE TO V12 IMMEDIATELY!”

I bit the bullet and upgraded. Wouldn’t ya know it, now Firefox doesn’t work at all. The process initiates, you can see it in task manager, but nothing happens. I rebooted, nothing happens. Won’t start in safemode, won’t start with all extensions turned off. Nothing.

Thanks a bunch, Mozilla. :dubious:

After my last update, it constantly crashes. I re-downloaded it. Same issue.

Back to Explorer I went.

There is such a thing as waiting too long to update. Guessing the updater couldn’t properly handle leaping from v3 to v12, and the ultimate fix will be to uninstall FF completely, reboot, then go to firefox.com for a shiny new installation of version 11. Best I can tell, the paint is still drying on v12.

At least the failure was not a complete surprise - looks like they will start forcibly updating users of old versions starting next month. This is probably just one reason FF doesn’t have much toehold in the corporate world as forced updates often have a way of breaking things.

I love Firefox. I use Nightly and I’ve never had a single real problem.

Well, V12 broke the themes I like, so I am a bit ticked off too. But really, no update between 3 and 12? What do you expect? (Malware is what you should expect, I suppose.)

They’ve continued to stealth-support v3 up until very recently… and keep in mind that Firefox changed their numbering system such that the disparity between 3 and 12 isn’t all that huge (I recognize that it’s still big, but not THAT big

Anyway, I liked 3, it is leagues faster than the version of IE we’re required to use at work, so I just stuck with it.

If you want things to Just Work, Firefox isn’t the browser for you. Chrome is. Chrome stealth updates - it just goes ahead and downloads and installs for you seamlessly.

Firefox is like the Linux of web browsers now - power users who want to control every second of their experience with arcane magics only, please.
