First time ER

Feel better soon BigT! Scary stuff.

I’m glad you’re okay.

Bed is the best. It’s my favorite thing in the world. But I also have a TV in my bedroom. (I wish I was in bed right now.) But I guess if you don’t then couch would be the best. Couch and TV are my second favorite.

I hope your ordered pizza delivered. The hospital food is bland.

So glad you went the safe route, now you don’t have to worry that it could be life threatening. Rest up and feel better!

Glad you’re alright.

How was your ER experience? It’s mine that you learn very quickly Emergency Room personnel consider very few things to be actual emergencies. Granted, most ERs tend to be packed with people who treat it like their primary care doctor (because it is), but still.

Something’s weird. I could have sworn I posted another response, but I don’t see it. Maybe I posted in the wrong thread? Maybe I sent it all to kayaker, when I meant to send partly a reply to him, and partly a reply to everyone?

I don’t remember what I said too much, so I’ll just respond. They did seem a little slow, but they did take me in right away. It took them 20 minutes or so to find a place to stick me, for both the blood tests and the IV. And then they still got it bad enough that the people in x-ray redid it. And then, when the phlebotomist came by (for the a repeat test they do before letting you leave), she just used my other arm and got it first try.

The blood tests take an hour, and my EKG said I wasn’t actively having a heart attack. So I had a lot of time listening to podcasts and did one post. It just kinda sucked typing, so I stopped doing that. In total, I spent five hours there.

My main complaint is them not warning me that the nitro could make me dizzy when moving to a wheelchair to be moved to the CAT scan. I’d been laying and felt fine for a while (after the nitro), but then thought there must be something really, really wrong and I literally shook the whole time–though it was also cold in there, and apparently the dye they use chills you, even though it feels warm at first.

Well, that and fix the 20 minute time getting my IV/blood. There were four people–have one try the other arm and then go with whoever gets it first.

I did like having wi-fi: even though I’d preloaded a ton of stuff on my phone.

How old are you? And you’ve never been to the ER? *Should * you have been, or are you just that lucky?

Lucky?
I’d guess most young adults have never been to the ER?

Help!!!

Seriously?

My first trip to the ER was when I was 3. Scarlet Fever.
Then when I was 4. Slipped and busted my lip on the edge of a sink (stitches required.)
Then when I was 5. I swallowed a penny.
Then there was the time I was bitten in the face by a dog. I can’t remember all the times, but there were plenty of sprained (possibly broken) ankles, acute fevers, etc. to warrant several trips to the ER during the course of my childhood.

I assumed that was normal. Maybe I’m just unlucky.

Weak constitution.
:stuck_out_tongue:

I’ve never been to the ER for anything for myself. We took my dad there once though.

I was about 27 the first time I was in a hospital.

Not at the hospital I went to. The food was actually pretty good. Of course, that depends on what you’re allowed to eat.

Get well, BigT. (Sucks about the nitro.) Hopefully it’s nothing serious.

I hope they get it figured out. Glad it’s not your heart. Keep us posted and feel better.

Yeah, I was surprised too. I probably went to the ER a dozen times during childhood. My brother went several times too.

  1. And my mom said I had been, but I was so young I don’t remember. Baby and toddler stuff.
I should have realized: I did die for 45 minutes as a kid after a high fever seizure.

Still, this is the first time I actually remember.

I’ve been to the ER, for myself, several times. First was when I was about 8 and I was falling over all the time. For awhile people just thought I was clumsy but then I fell and knocked my noggin so I got taken in and turns out I had an inner ear thingy. I ended up getting little things put in my ears. I’m not even sure if I still have them. I should ask my mom about that.

Tympanostomy tubes?

Worked ER for fifteen years. Most of what we see are not emergencies in the sense that most will not lose life or limb without immediate treatment. We understand people are in the ER because they are concerned or rightly suspect it could be a big problem. Chest pains need an immediate ECG and a cardiac work up but so many lung, GI, musculoskeletal and psychosomatic things cause symptoms, plus the heart. Glad to hear you did okay, the nitro can really drop your blood pressure.

Yeah, I’m not mad or anything. I assume they know what is full out emergency. They did do the EKG right away. I think a lot of it was staying calm to help the patient be calm. Probably also why they kept asking me my name and stuff, to distract me.
