I didn’t see this posted anywhere, but the first trailer to The X-Files: I Want To Believe is online.
If it’s at all possible, I think I know less than I did before I watched that.

Interesting, it doesn’t read like a typical X-Files storyline based on what little they are showing. I’m not entirely sure where the series left off so I’m curious what the lay of the land will be like when this starts. Mulder and Scully are obviously not working together and don’t appear to be in much contact based on Mulder apparently confronting her at work. The central plot seems to revolve around a missing person case, though I wasn’t able to pick up who that person might be. Mulder’s sister? Also, there was no sign of Cigarette Smoking Man or any of the Syndicate members, were they all dead at this point?
Off to Wiki…
I hate Mulder’s sister. If there’s one thing The X-Files completely screwed up, it’s the saga of Mulder’s sister. If the movie is about her, I’ll scream.
And I think every member of the Syndicate is dead. But you can never be too sure.
I suspect that this is a “monster of a week” style movie, not anything to do with the so-called “myth arc.” In that regards, this looks very much like a typical X-Files storyline. If I’m right, it probably won’t have anything to do with Samantha, CSM, or the Syndicate. Or maybe that’s just what I really, really hope.
From what press I’ve read, this won’t be about the mythos of the x-files too much… as in, it won’t have all the hardcore conspiracy tanglements that mired the last few seasons into unwatchability. Basically, its a paranormal tale, completly self-contained, that the producers are hoping will re-ignite the x-files as a viable franchise, y’know; ten years after everyone lost interest.
From the trailer, it doesnt look to me that much different from a TB episode, as if the trailer could very well have been shown at the end of one episode in a “coming next week” style. Nothing in it screams “SEE ME IN THE CINEMA!”.
Could be, but I’m not entirely sure that the producers would go through the process of making a feature film and neglect the Conspiracy. It’s been too central to what the X-Files are. The MoW episodes were some of they best and most entertaining but that wasn’t why most people tuned in week-to-week. Perhaps this will start out of as a MoW story that turns out to be a hint of the larger picture and re-opens the Alien Colonization/Syndicate/Bounty Hunters theme.
It would have been cool if they’d gotten everyone together to do a occasional made-for-TV MoW movie or mini-series. That would have been better than the abortion that was seasons 7-9.
I can see how it might be difficult to create a coherent conspiracy theory for the movie considering the TV series has been dead for almost a decade and they attempted to wrap up many of the mysteries once viewership had dwindled.
I just hope this is good.
It’s been a long time since I’ve watched any X-Files, but if there’s one thing I remember, it’s that the Cigarette Smoking Man would Not. Stay. Dead.
The movie looks mildly interesting. Better than the last one, anyways.
But are the owls what they seem?
He was vaproized by a missile in the last episode, I think he’s gone for good.
You mean who. WHOOOOOO!
That’s what you think.
I can’t for the life of me think of who would think this would be a good idea?
I mean, Chris Carter has proven he isn’t able to tell stories.
Second any movie will most likely end up going straight-to-video.
Only hardcore Xfiles-fans would be willing to pay money to go see it in the cinema, I would think.
As far as I am concerned, somebody who owns all seasons of the X-files, this hack will not be seeing another dime of my money for as long as he lives.
I 'unno, some of the one-shot freak-of-the-week episodes were pretty good. The real glitch came about when Carter started a story arc he had no incentive to finish.
Unfortunately, most of the best one-shot episodes that Chris Carter wrote weren’t that great. I would have prefered a movie written by Daren Morgan or another writer from the show.
And he directed it, too.
Ouch.
