Fish jumping into the boat due to light? (video)

Ok, what the heck is going on in this video? Two guys are in a small boat in a river at night. The one in front of the camera is flashing a bright spotlight into the water, and fish start going nuts jumping all over the place. It’s the craziest thing I’ve ever seen. Any idea what’s happening here? (they’re not speaking English)

Mild work warning - the site has those “meet these chicks from your area” ads on it. I’ll two-click it just in case through my site.

Very neat video, I like it.

Fish quite often jump to avoid predators; my guess would be that’s what is happening here; they’re not so much jumping toward the light as trying to jump away from the projected beam, perhaps tending to head into deeper water - i.e. the middle of the river, which just happens to be where the boat is located.

It’s an extreme version of an old technique called lantern fishing. In the start of the vid, you can see a lot of big bugs attracted by the light. Then they go into a fish-rich area with a boat and two lights (one for the camera, and one to shine around.) The light draws all the bugs from a hundred yards, and the fish have a feeding frenzy, leaping up to get the bugs and the little fish that are feeding on the smaller bugs.

C’mon, those fish aren’t jumping for food.

Wow, that’s amazing.

I just love that the Top Gun theme is playing very faintly in the background.

Oh, great–see what that did to the Google ads?

If you have them turned off, there are FOUR “meet chicks in your area” ads at the bottom of the column.
