They had to restrain a violinist from running into the stands to hit the trash-talking fan.
From now on, no more Beaujolet Nouveau after the Intermission. And no more bottlesw – only plastic wineglasses.
I used to usher at the Pops and any mild trouble we had was never during the concert, but before when folks discovered there’d be sharing a manhole-cover-sized table with four strangers and during intermissions when they were serving booze.
The proles upstairs aren’t served the booze although they can come down and get it from the bar.
As for the program, it’s something serious/intermission/something fun with guest star/something pop, then the Star-Spangled Banner. I worked there during the '97 season and got to hear way too many arrangements of ‘My Heart Will Go On’. Gigi would have been more than welcome.
I am dying to know what the fight was over. And it wasn’t a foppish slap-fight one might expect at a society, it was what we would call back in my neighborhood “a squabble.”
Fox 25 said that one guy got tired of hearing the other guy jawing during the recital, and that’s what set it off. But the best part was the poll they conducted, responding to the question “What would you do if someone asked you to be quiet at the Pops?”
61% said they would be quiet.
5% said they would change seats.
34% said they would fight the shusher.
Second Guy: F— You. Why are you worried about it? You and your bucktoothed wife can’t tell the difference between a requiem and a rigaudon anyhow. And your suit looks cheap, too.
At that point it was on… Over 100 punches were thrown, a shirt was torn. No injuries were reported.
I had the exact reaction to the title that I think the OP wanted me to have. “Fistfight Breaks out in the Stands” Okay whatever. Normal sport fan behavior. “at the Boston Pops” - WHAT?!
But then, what do you expect from the trashy crowd a pop symphony draws?
