What happened to all the Dopers who were dieting and exercising? I figure with the holiday season upon us, some might need extra encouragement.
As for me…well…I’m doing OK. The scale couldn’t decide today if I was 117 or 118 so I am taking 117.5 I started Weight Watchers in the middle of July at 130.6 So the weight has been coming off slowly. But to be perfectly honest I haven’t been sticking to the plan with any regularity and I have only been exercising sporadically. My goal was 115. If I can hit that and maintain it, I’d like to try for 112.
But I am up to about a 210-lb squat. Haven’t been able to do much brenchpressing because my left shoulder didn’t like them, but I’ve maxed out the pull-down bar in one of the gyms I go to (200 lbs wasn’t enough for me, for some reason).
Well, I haven’t lost any weight since I started exercising in August, but I can now lift more than double what I ever could back in high school. I’m only 10lbs. away from being able to bench press my weight. Now if I could just get rid of this roll of fat over my stomach, everything would be perfect.
Sublight, for a second I thought you said you were only 10 pounds!
My stomach is a problem for me too. I hate doing ab exercises. My arms are getting little muscles, and my thighs are at least smaller than they were before, but I have been totally neglecting my stomach. At first I was just like, “Oh, I’ll work on that when I get the rest of myself in better shape,” but now I AM in better shape and I have to start doing my abs. Bleah.
I have lost 32 pounds since I started in August. I now have hit the proverbial wall and am not going anywhere. So I started to eat, drink(booze) and do Mary, I mean… be merry :D. Not good for the diet, but fun. I need to find a way to get kick started.
Probably your form is off. Try dumbbell benches. Start with each about a third of your flat bench weight - i.e. if you were repping 225 start with 75s. Start slow.
After 2 weeks off fighting a killer sinus infection, I’ve been to the gym 6 days since Saturday (missed yesterday). Walking on treadmill, running on the free runner, riding the stationary cycle and working on the Cybex machines. I stopped working in the free weight room because those guys intimidate me. The atmosphere is more mellow in the aerobic/Cybex room anyway. I’m still trying to lose weight to make it easier to deal with future pregnancy (the plan is to toss the contraceptives early next year) and I’d like to lose 20-30 pounds by then.
So far I’m slowly starving myself to death, but I take heart from the fact that my youngest sister lost over 100 pounds on WeightWatchers and now she weighs 6 pounds less than me. [klingon] I cannot let her defeat me! [/klingon]
That’s certainly an interesting concept, lurker. My father, who has lifted weights for upwards of 15 years, taught me how to bench press, and using the form he taught me (and the same form I’ve seen other use) I’m now having pain lifting weights in my left shoulder. I suspect it has something to do with my not learning to throw properly. 50 throws of a football and my arm is done for a while.
However, I was doing 200 lbs at home. Then I get to school and use the machine there and I’m having shoulder problems. Perhaps there’s something wrong with the bench . . . it’s certainly harder than the one I used to use.
At any rate, I can still do military presses.
FTR, my benchpress is right now stationary at 200 lbs until I can do it comfortable again.
I started up my yoga again, which is going well. Its astanga yoga so its a little more vigorous than *hatha]/i] yoga. I was too busy with classes and stuff this fall to keep up with my running so I kind of eased off that in September.
I never ceased to be amazed at how fast yoga helps me to get tight again (actually, I guess that word should be “taut” or “toned” since I’m really getting looser…hey, get your mind out of the gutter! )
iampunha, you’ve complained about your weight being too low before, but keep in mind that you’re only 18 and still growing. I weighed about 165 when I was your age and was the same height as I am now. At 25 I hit a growth spurt with regards to my build. Almost overnight I went from a 16/32-33 shirt to a 16 1/2/34-35. (I could probably get away with a 16 neck now, but 16 1/2 is so nice and roomy.) I weigh about 190 now and I’m in much better shape than I was when I was 18 (not that I’m up for Mr. Universe or anything). So, if I was you, I wouldn’t worry too much about a low weight until my mid-20s or so.
In response to Michi’s OP: I’m pretty happy with the shape I’m in, the amount I can lift, how far/fast I can run/hike, etc. I wouldn’t mind losing these love handles, though. Damn those free snacks at work!
Thanks, Golf Widow! But before I go shopping, I want to get a little more tone. It’s funny, I have lost 13 pounds since you have seen me, but my clothes have only dropped one size. I’m pretty sure it is because I still don’t exercise enough. I wish I could afford to get back into a gym! I think I might pick up some heavier hand weights today, and get some ankle weights too.
I have lost 5 of the 10 lbs that I gained when I was on disability with a bad back in September. I’m back to weight training at the health club, but so far I’ve only managed twice a week. I want to gain some muscle and lose some (more) fat. But I have been eating a bunch of crap this month (binged on chocolate yesterday), and I need to stop.
oooo…chocolate…that’s a big problem this time of year, isn’t it? I stopped in to my hospital last night to visit my puppy, and a client had just brought in a HUGE box of GODIVA chocolate! AAAAAAA!!! I had two pieces, which I am sure contained my fat content for the next week. It is a good thing I wasn’t on last night, or I would have eaten more! Thankfully, I don’t work again till tomorrow, and I know that the box will be gone by then.
Cyndar, at least you had good chocolate (not that there is really such a thing as bad chocolate). My boss brought in a bunch of stuff her kids got on Halloween. Not even close to Godiva, or my favorite - Lindt Extra Dark.
