Fix your own glasses (half string lens)

I woke up and broke my glasses by pressing my elbow on them while they were on the bed next to me. The string holding the bottom of the lens snapped. I went to youtube to see how to fix them. I went to Walmart spent like $1.84 or something close to that on a couple of fishing lines with hooks on them. I snapped the ends off and inserted them easily into where the old ones were after pulling the old line out and BAMM. Glasses are just like before. I know y’all on the straight dope are eager to learn and here is something that to me is priceless because I was ready to go to a eyeglass repair shop or something and pay them whatever they asked for meanwhile five minutes worth of work and a trip to Walmart was all it took.

I have worn half-frame style glasses for years. So this happens to me from time-to-time. I’ve used fishing line I’ve had in the basement for years but it’s too thin. But good enough to give me breathing room to get to the eyeglasses store where I bought them. They do a proper repair (including getting the tension right) for free.

I’ve also gotten free service at places where I didn’t buy glasses from. E.g., one place where Mrs. FtG bought some glasses was replaced by a different company. The new place provided free service despite being unrelated to the old company. Some company’s understand the value of building up their customer base and this is a great way to do it.
