Fixing an HTTP connection problem

I got a browser hijacker but Malwarebytes knocked it right out. I went in and manually deleted the two files it was trying to upload (or it might have been a second malware). I know I an connected to the internet because Spyware Doctor was able to upgrade, but any application relying on HTTP won’t connect.

OS: Win7x64
Diagnosis gives: Device or resource is not set up to accept connections on port “The World Wide Web (HTTP)”

My quick diagnosis was that the hijacker changed the HTTP settings to go internal and that I need to get the settings back. System Restore did not work because it claims my antivirus software (Norton was turned off) prevented the restore.

So how do I turn on HTTP or redirect it accordingly? I’m at work so I have about 3 hours to get some ideas to try at home.

Go to the Lan/Proxy settings screen in Internet Explorer: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-vista/Change-proxy-settings-in-Internet-Explorer

Should be set to automatically detect connections.

And, do you happen to be running as the Admin in Windows 7? If so, big mistake. Run as the Standard User instead. The Admin account is only supposed to install software and configure settings.

thanks
