There’s a great Thai restaurant near my office that serves this incredible lemonade. It tastes like regular lemonade in every capacity except that it’s carbonated giving it that “fizzy” feeling when you drink it. I can’t get enough of this stuff. Is there a way to make it at home without having to experiment with various disappointing versions of pouring regular lemonade into club soda/soda water/sparkling water to see what happens?
Get frozen concentrated lemonade from the store. Follow the directions for making it, but substitute club soda for regular water.
This should work really well.
Did you try it?
Not yet, I need to get to the store sometime this week to get the frozen lemonade. But I can’t stand to wait too much longer… as you well know it’s 90+ degrees in DC today and I feel like chugging lemonade. As soon as I do this I’ll let you know how it turns out, but your recommendation sounds perfect.
standard lemonade in the UK is carbonated…
You can find the more traditional US ‘lemon juice and sugar’ if you search around.
True, although what we generally call ‘lemonade’ is typically completely clear and sometimes hasn’t ever seen a lemon (I believe this is what Americans would call ‘lemon soda’). Our ‘Traditional Style’ lemonade, however is sometimes a little closer to what I think Winnie is describing; sparkling, lemony and perhaps with bits of actual lemon pulp suspended in it.
Check out some health food or gourmet stores - they’ll probably carry something like Limonata, which sounds a lot like what you’re describing.
Thai fizzy lemonade would be cheaper and better tasting than Limonata, IMO. And I like Limonata.
I sometimes think Thai restaurants have the market cornered on refreshing drinks. I like Thai iced tea and coffee, too. They also have a salty plum soda that’s just perfect for restoring the ol’ electrolytes.
I would think using seltzer or club soda would always have a slightly bitter taste under the lemon/sugar. I would try squeezing a plain lemon in to Tonic Water, which is like a sugary club soda without the bitterness.
Huh? Tonic water is quite bitter. It has quinine in it.
I like it, but club soda is considerably less bitter than tonic water.
I think you may have the two confused.
They have several kinds of fizzy lemonade at Trader Joe’s. I can’t remember the names, but I’ve tried a few and they’re really good. Try mixing with vodka for a delicious cocktail.
Nooooo…Tonic Water is unbelievably sweet (with a slight lemony undertone because it also contains citric acid.) It’s only bitter when it has gin in it. Club Soda has sodium & CO2 in it. It tastes chemical-y. I have both on hand and had a drink of each to make sure. If you’re looking to make a fizzy, lemony drink, I’d use tonic.
Every tonic water I’ve ever tasted is quite bitter and not even slightly sweet. Club soda is more neutral, but slightly salty. Seltzer is the most neutral of the carbonated waters, in my experience.
Winnie you an get both seltzer/club soda and tonic for around 99 cents a 2 liter. Try BOTH and see what you think.
I always found tonic water very bitter straight, but adding gin for some reason takes most of the bitterness out.
Oh, for heaven’s sake.
Tonic water is both very sweet and very bitter, since it contains both sugar and quinine. What it isn’t (noticeably) is sour. Acids (like carbonic acid, which is disolved in carbonated drinks to produce CO2) taste sour. Tonic has carbonic acid as well, but the sugar and quinine overwhelm the slight sourness. Soda and selzer waters only contain carbonic acid, and so are noticeably sour.
