Flash-mobs

What exactly is a flash-mob? I’ve heard the term so much during the Democratic campaigns, but never actually heard of one happening. The same goes for Meet-Ups. They seem like they got more hype than they deserve.

Here is a recent article on Slashdot describing a flash-mob supercomputer.

A flash mob is when a group of people that are interested in such a thing are warned slightly ahead of time to:

  • assemble at a certain place
  • at a certain time
  • stay for only a certain amount of time
  • (optionally) do something that the organizers have decided they should do.
  • then they quickly disperse.

I’ve seen it referred to as “The Performance Art of the 21st Century”

I don’t think it’s appropriate in GQ to say how I feel about them.

Larry Niven wrote a short story called Flash Crowd, which was about people using cheap teleportation to arrive en masse at news events being reported live, then finding themselves unable to enter the teleportation booths to leave (because of more incoming people).
