Flash: new TV show (boxed spoilers)

Glad I wasn’t the only one who got that vibe.

Well, he is the Scarlet Speedster.

My suspicion is he’s the Reverse Flash of this version, back in our time for some nefarious scheme (mostly so we can have a dramatic scene in the season finale when Barry screams “It was you! You killed my mother! I trusted you!”

I’m a fan of the character so I’ll give it a shot but i was a bit generic. And I am so damn tired of every hero removing his mask in the middle of the action; it’s especially annoying when Arrow’s closing line was “Take your own advice - wear a mask.”

I’d give it a few more chances. I think they were desperately trying to cover all the bases and tell some fragment of a story in 44:31. It’s hard enough to have a coherent pilot for non-mainstream ideas in an hour and a half or two.

Me too. It’s also annoying when they always take their helmets off, too (and usually get shot in the head two minutes later). I get that we have to have faces uncovered to see who is who, but damn! Keep your friggin’ helmet and mask on!

Once they go into Time Travel, I am gone.

But Flash was a wiseacre, and they need to show more of that, less naif boy-toy.

Yup, Shodan add his pair of pennies as well. Time travel just ends the story, everything is possible after that, and then there’s no excuse to not use time travel to solve any problem. Time travel has to be the entire theme of a work, or left out entirely.

For an origin story the attitude is ok, but the Flash was more mature in the comics. Maintaining his secret identy was a big part of the comic storylines, they touched on that here, but as mentioned above he can’t keep taking his mask off. I understand the actors want to do that, but it detracts from the nature of the character.

So the guy is just going to cause thousands of dollars in car damage every time he goes anywhere? the cars he wrecked by running near them probably cost more than the bank robbers were stealing in the first place.

I liked it and was happy to see a superhero story that was fun rather than dark and depressing.

QFT, and I want to see more quips.

Why was Avengers and Guardians more successful than the newest Superman and Batman*? Quips, light humor, banter. Not a lot, but just enough. It’s not just Marvel vs DC, since the latest X-men was too dark.

I am sooo fucking tired of dark and edgy.

This is why I think the new upcoming Superman/Batman will fail. Well, not “fail” but be disappointing.

  • Yes, I know the last two Dark Knight films have done better than Guardians, but it’s still running.

Why has DC gone with darker costume colors, in both movies and TV? The original Superman movie with Christopher Reeve (okay, it wasn’t really the first Superman movie, but IMO, it was the start for all the movies we have today) embraced the bright primary colors, and it didn’t seem to be a problem that affected its popularity. Costumes in Marvel movies don’t look cartoonish with the brighter colors. With the Nolan Batman movies, it made sense to go with dark. Arrow has Ollie following more or less in Batman’s footsteps, so a very dark green whilst skulking about makes sense there. But in Superman Returns and Man of Steel, why darken the red to the point where it’s practically a dull reddish-brown? I have the same [del]complaint[/del] observation about The Flash. Do the darker costumes make it easier to merge live shots and CGI? Or is it just a stylistic choice?

The excuse usually given is seeing the actor’s face lets us connect emotionally with the character, but that seems a cop-out. James Earl Jones created one of cinemas most memorable characters with just his voice, and Hugo Weaving did pretty well as V.

I had to download it to be able to watch it, but quite enjoyed it.

Speaking of DC darkening its heroes, Barry Allen has been a blond since 1956.

It’s been decades since I followed comics. I remember Green Arrow teaming up with Green Lantern, I remember a couple of Flash/Green Lantern team-ups, but did Flash and Green Arrow ever team up?

Ollie and Barry were both in the Justice League of America in the 1960’s and 1970’s. I suppose they teamed up outside of big team events sometimes?

This meme isn’t really true yet it persists. Marvel’s costumes are darkened and desaturated too. Iron Man’s red, for example, is of a similar value to the Flash’s.

I think people remember Captain America’s costume in Avengers and use that as the point of comparison between the universes. You’ll notice, though, that they pulled back on that bright blue for the Winter Soldier.

You COULD say that: http://img3.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20091010210627/marvel_dc/images/4/46/Flash_Green_Lantern_Brave_and_the_Bold_4.jpg

Upon reflection, I agree with you. So, okay, let’s throw out the sentence “Costumes in Marvel movies don’t look cartoonish with the brighter colors.” I still don’t understand why red in a costume has to be so dark one might not even recognize it as red if one didn’t know better. Perhaps it’s one of those changed details that comics fans (or me, since I’m the one kicking about it) raise a fuss about, while the rest (majority) of the movie-going audience never bat an eye.

I still can’t get over Hugh Jackman being too tall and handsome for Wolverine. I’m not even a big X-Men (or Marvel) fan, but somehow that’s the one change to a comic property that I refuse to accept. Comic fans get hung up on canonical things that most people don’t remotely care about.
