This was one of the best episodes they’ve done, largely due to Kristen Wiig, who I’m beginning to think is going to be huge in the movie comedy genre. I understand that she’s an SNL regular, but since I don’t watch that show, my first exposure to her was in the movie Ghost Town, where she was very funny as the surgeon. She has nearly flawless comedic timing, and a face that just misses being pretty. Anyway, the ep bears rewatching (as usual) to catch all the lines I didn’t get the first time around (that Kiwi accent, you know). The song about epileptic dogs (and the resulting disaster) was hilarious.
I haven’t watched the episode yet (will later tonight) but did download the song that was available on iTunes from this episode. Regrettably, it was the first “swing and a miss” song that they’ve released this season. It was “I’m in Love with a Sexy Lady”. From what I can tell just listening to it, it will be much better in the context of an episode.
But then I’m comparing the new track to “Hurt Feelings” and “Carol Brown”, both of which I love.
“Send a check in a letter and make a Setter feel better”
“Make a donation and save a shaky Dalmatian”
I couldn’t breathe!
Yeah, that song was a bit lame. But the other one is a home run.
“My name is Brahbrah, by the way.”
Great episode. I like (not love) this show, it’s amusing and offbeat and charming. But I don’t LOL alot at it. This episode had that.
Okay, watched it earlier and totally agree - the Epileptic Dogs song was hilarious! That should have been the single this week. I also loved how Bret kept saying “pepileptic”. And the very end …
Bret: How long has your dog been missing?
Brahbrah: Six years.
I liked this one, but my favorite so far this year was last week’s Michel Gondry-directed episode.
Too Many Dicks On The Dance Floor
But the best song and video from the season so far has to be Sugalumps.
The first song is definitely more funny in context. I thought it was hilarious!
Am I the only one who thinks the songs are a little boring, and that Murray steals the show?
I love Murray! I like Jemaine/Brett too but Murray does steal the show.
“How do you like a taste of your own dick medicine, Jemaine?” hee hee…
The Sugarlumps episode and the episode with the new Austrailian girlfriend were both comparative to last season but I think more of the songs are misses this season. I was distracted during last weeks, I will have to re-watch it.
Rhys Darby is an accomplished actor, so he really stands out from the others, who are amateurs by comparison. I like that the series normally uses unknowns for the parts (like the dancers in Too Many Dicks and the members of Bret’s Toughs).
DoctorJ: those have been the best songs, for sure. I do the Sugalumps song when my wife walks into the room. Drives her nuts.
Not completely unknowns–the bouncer (and the head of the conga line) in the “Too Many Dicks” video is Randy Jones, aka the cowboy from the Village People. I thought it was a nice touch.
Sorry for the late arrival to the thread. We had DVR’ed it (even though it’s On Demand) but didn’t actually watch it until last night. And I didn’t want any spoilers before we saw it, so I just kept it in mind that this thread was here.
I believe these guys are channelling The Beatles! They’ve taken the ideas the Fab Four had in their earlier movies and pared it down to two guys and Mel and Murray and Dave and have taken a shot at the zaniness of the early 60’s genre that later produced The Monkees and Laugh-In and what not.
I was laughing the entire episode at the way they work their rhyming. The set-up line doesn’t even give a clue as to what crazy word they’ll be rhyming, but without exception the rhyme will surprise and tickle.
And the concepts! Epileptic dogs. The strobe lights made me laugh so much that by the time one of them acknowledged that the dogs had gone into fits because of it, I was already about to pass out from laughing.
This episode was by far the best of the season. I do find their earlier music (last season and their stage show) more enjoyable, but I’m relishing the way the creative juices are flowing from the entire production team. Fresh Air City!
That, and I swear another one of the patrons dancing was Ron Jeremey - ~0:46 of the YouTube link above.
I don’t think so. That man is completely bald on top. Ron Jeremy is not ( I just googled him to be sure - shudder).
My favourite part of this episode was “Love is a Weapon of Choice”. I laughed at all the borrowed elements from the “Total Eclipse of the Heart” video (e.g. the inexplicable dancing ninjas, the dove, the fencers, etc.). The only thing missing was Bret or Jemaine with glowy eyes. I recently rewatched the Eclipse video which turned out to be fortuitous, as I don’t think I would have recognized the homage otherwise.
On the other hand, I didn’t much enjoy Kristen Wiig. In every role I’ve seen her play, she’s basically doing the same deadpan, and it gets on my nerves after a while. She was good in “Love is a Weapon…”, though.
Did you see the ep from last season where Bret does the “Footloose” dance parody? My wife couldn’t figure out why I found that so funny. Turns out she never saw the movie.
