Just 'cause some guy has been videotaped saying this happened, doesn’t mean it actually happened.
Why are you assuming it pisses me off?
Ya think?
I’m just glad that Flip Wilson isn’t alive to see this.
:smack:
Audis have manifolds.
Flip charts are retarded.
Just call it a fuck chart. Or a waste of paper.
Poe’s Law? Your title reads like the title from those who rant about PC people. “Can you believe it? Now ___ is offensive!”
If you’re making fun of people who think that, then more power to ya. But that’s getting to be a bit more meta than people normally expect, I think.
Just my 2 cents.
For many different types of electronic controllers (environmental controls, fire alarm, intrusion detection, etc.), it is quite common to refer to the main circuit board as the “motherboard” and the modules that connect to them as “daughterboards.”
This has always raised my hackles. Aren’t “fatherboards” equally worthy? What’s the problem in having a fatherboard with daughterboards? Can’t motherboards have sonboards?
I just don’t get it.
I was bored and bullshit amuses me.
Or more accurately, responses to the bullshit amuse me.
There are more than a few clever people on the board who post witty responses.
It never occurred to me that anybody would take this thread seriously.
Thug is racist now? Have the South Asians objected?
Yes, it’s often used as a dog whistle for young black men. No, the word’s origins don’t change that.
Good question.
But given that daughterboards plug into motherboards, sometimes via cable but often directly with conductive tabs into slots, I’m not sure how we can rename these things without arousing (heh :)) the anti-incest thought police.
Whatever you do, don’t plug the Oedipus board into the Jocasta board; blindness and despoliation is sure to follow. Plus extra sticky magic smoke leaking out.
It’s also a perfectly good word for a person of any race who practices certain forms of criminal behavior, mainly strong-arm robbery and physically harming or intimidating other people, without reference to the complexion or ancestry of the subject.
Actually, it’s meant that since at least the 1930s.* The standard usage isn’t a “racist dog whistle”, it’s conventional English, and to hell anyone who calls me racist for calling a thug a thug. I don’t give a damn what violent crooks or word precriptivists think of my vocabulary.
*Early union organizers were wont to describe anti-worker vigilantes and hired strikebreakers from the Pinkerton Detective Agency as “gun thugs”, and the use of “thug” to describe a violent criminal can be sighted in English-language crime fiction from Edward Anderson’s 1937 *Thieves Like Us *onward.
And “gay” meant happy. Times change, language evolves.
So “thug” is now soley a racist slur, and cannot be used in any other context? Like, I’m watching a game and I see a player sucker punch someone, and say, “Milan Lucic is a fucking thug”. That’s no longer appropriate?
I don’t buy it. :dubious: I can definetly see cases where it is indeed used as in place of the n-word or whatever. But I have yet to see “thug” going away entirely. Unless you have proof to the contrary, I remain unconvinced.
To be fair, those ads are fairly questionable in hindsight, along with those Pearl Cream ads.
“Thug” is not **solely **racist, but of late its usage seems to have been almost entirely and not always justifiably applied to young black men. If anything, the problem is that it isn’t used (or very rarely) for young white men engaging in similarly objectionable behaviors.
