Like to compare notes if anyone here takes flo max, Today was my first time taking it. I am very dizzy and my blood pressure shot up to about 158. I have never seen it over about 130 before. I took the medicine about noon time. Any idea how long it takes to wear off. Not even sure why he gave it to me. No problem urinating but prostate is swollen some.
I use Flomax (tamsulosin) standard dosage: 0.4 mg once a day in the evening. No such side-effects that I know of. Sounds wrong to me somehow. Flomax is an alpha-blocker that for some reason acts rather specifically on the prostate, but other similar alpha-blockers (to-wit: Hytrin, aka terazosin) are more general and commonly used for both high blood pressure and prostate trouble. Typically when you start that, they start you on a real small dosage since it can make your blood pressure drop too much at first (that might explain dizziness). Sudden rise in blood pressure like sounds wrong to me. You need to consult with your doctor. (No idea how long it takes to wear off.) IANAD.
If you’re not sure why your doctor prescribed it for you, you definitely should discuss it with him and describe your side effects to him. This isn’t something that strangers on a message board can diagnose for you.
It does sound wrong. Tamsulosin helps with the symptoms of a swollen prostate but not with the actual swelling. If you’ve got a swollen prostate without difficulty in urination tamsulosin isn’t going to help. On the other hand; it shouldn’t increase your blood pressure either. You really need to talk to your doctor about it.
I told him I had some frequency urinating and I think he interpreted it as having trouble. My frequency is just due to a recent bout of constipation I have been fighting.
I didn’t have the symptoms you describe, but if I had that would have been the last time I took the meds!
Talk to your doctor. If your prostate qualifies, consider a TURP surgery. It is uncomfortable for a week-but it is a pretty much permanent solution to an enlarged prostate. Much better than the medicine. And I was on tamsulosin for years with few side effects.
I will look into that. I had never heard of it before. I had a high psa reading a few months ago he gave me some antibiotics and retested and it went back down to zero.
Many years ago, the urologist gave me a bunch of free samples of FloMax. Saying they would relax the spincter (sp) muscles. He also said once you started taking them, you would have to take them the rest of your life. I gave them back to him, saying I don’t want to get hooked on them.
Later, I was diagnosed with prostrate cancer. And was having difficult time peeing. I took the FloMax. No complications. But now, when I have the urge to go, I need to find a bathroom right now. And sometimes it is a problem. As bathrooms are difficult to find here.
Definitely talk to your health care provider.
Prior thread about TURP here, from about five years ago. Note update by Jackmannii, advising that TURP is being phased out in favor of newer less invasive procedures.
That’s called “urge incontinence.” I take 25 mg. of Myrbetriq for it, and no longer need to be near a bathroom 24/7. And that’s in addition to Tamsulosin and Finasteride.
