Oh. Sorry, A Monkey With a Gun. I have bitched about it quite a bit in this thread, but haven’t posted in the ATMB thread. I didn’t and don’t think banning was called for, although I was glad to see him get a warning. As I posted earlier, I’ve dissected a cat and participated in hog butchering - my stomach isn’t THAT delicate. I do require a bit of advance warning, though. Grandpa never just woke me up and took me outside to work.
And I guess I’ll never understand the reasoning behind it. There are lots of things, both in real life and on this board, that I’m just not interested in or actively don’t like. I don’t feel the need to rain on the parade of others who enjoy those things. I don’t understand meanspirited people and I don’t like them.
Actually, the title was Ban Floater. Or at least action him. The “at least” indicates that “actioning”(whatever that is) should be the least amount of punishment, but that banning would be preferred. It’s like telling your kid, “Clean your room, or at the very least pick up the socks.” There is no questioning which you would prefer the kid to do, but you added a minimum action in hopes that the kid will at least do that.
Yes, it’s called “BAN Floater. or action him” (emphasis mine). And we also have posters saying a warning isn’t enough.
Please understand, I’m on board with the warning. Although I don’t think the site as that bad, he sure as hell should have given some type of description. But I view that more as Floater having piss poor comic timing and execution. That thread was not the place to drop some gallows humor.
I didn’t look at the link, and won’t, so I don’t know what wax trays look like. In my biology glass, we dissected frogs on metal trays, and I got an A in that class. I may not have recognized “biology class” in that site, particularly if I had been immediately grossed out and clicked close.
I’m sorry, Guin. I shouldn’t have posted that. Sometimes I forget how desensitized I am. I’m a 38 year old nursing student that deals with some serious gory shit, and before this career change I was a molecular bio veterinary research lab guy that used to have to do an occasional necropsy on dogs and cats. Not everybody is at ease with what is beneath the skin of animals and humans as I am. I have to remember that, and I apologize.
Okay - well, I’m totally missing the humor part of it. I don’t generally have a problem with a little gallows humor. I’m not a particularly sensitive soul. But if humor is what you’re after, you gotta know your audience. Maybe in another context, it might have been funny? But in the context of that particular thread, there’s no humor there at all. Assuming Floater even read the thread at all before dropping his turd, he had to have known that this was not the audience for that kind of humor. I think the people who are assuming that it was just a lame attempt at humor are insulting his intelligence and giving him way too much credit. It seems apparent that there was no other purpose than to threadshit. As crudely as possible. Has he even apologized or attempted to explain his rationale?
I like cats. I have cats. But I consider that beside the point. I don’t find much humor (even assuming a more appropriate context) in seeing pictures of skinned and/or dissected animals. I don’t even want to see a picture of a skinned rat or raccoon and I HATE rats and raccoons!
Dropping such pics, without warning, in a feelgood thread about a rescued cat is beyond insensitive. It’s just crude, rude and insulting to the OP.
And I admit to being a little befuddled by the initial lack of concern from the mods. I just saw Stoid being warned for a lame insult, Ambivalid being warned for a lame jokey insult and Jack Batty being warned for a lame joke. And this kind of threadshit gets no response at all? I found that baffling. I’m a bit reassured that the warning was eventually issued, because I was beginning to fall into the ‘what can they be thinking?!!’ mindset and, well I generally like this message board and would not want to feel that the rules are so…malleable.
First off, the pictures in the link are quite similar to dissecting frogs. It’s just a cat instead. Second, they don’t pop up at first. The top of the page says “How to cook a cat”, with animated photoshop gif of a kitten and a fork. You actually have to scroll down before you can see the dissection photos. They are not the first things you see. If somehow the top of the page doesn’t clue you in to what it is and you DO scroll down, the first pic shows surgically gloved hands about to cut the ventral skin of a preserved cat and the second one shows the cat with the epidermis pulled back and the abdominal muscle structure exposed. It’s really not that bad. The next pictures show cats on trays with their epidermis partially or completely removed, but again, you have to scroll down to get to them. Neither viscera nor blood is ever shown.
Ah. I’d have stopped right there and not seen the rest so would have been a non-issue for me. I wonder if that is all that Floater did - stopped at “how to cook a cat”?
It’s cool. No, I really haven’t seen that, and it was really creepy. I think if I hadn’t been warned, it WOULD have freaked me out. I’m too much of a cat person. If it was just a dead cat, it wouldn’t have bothered me, but the whole blood and guts thing…ugh. And actually, I didn’t take biology in high school, believe it or not. I took horticulture and psychology instead.
(Likewise, I don’t mind seeing dead bodies – no big deal, I grew up around that. But autopsy photos – not my thing)
My father and my aunt once dissected a dead cat they found at the side of the road when they were kids. Then they gave it a funeral. He became a funeral director and she became a nurse. Go figure.
So, either you’re too weaselly to actually confront a specific post(er) or you got nothing. That’s what I thought. FWIW, you shouldn’t get so enraptured with the “You’re all a bunch of idiots” mentality that you don’t actually read anything.

I think he probably knew, but I kinda doubt that it was really his intention to thread shit. Don’t get me wrong, Floater definitely dropped a big steaming one in that thing, but I doubt his intention was to be a troll. I honestly think it was a failed joke. It failed spectacularly, true, but I think it was more of a wrong place, wrong time kind of thing.
