Floppy Dog Ears...Don't Want Them

There are. Unfortunately there seems to be a huge rift in the GSD breeder community. There are several takes on which direction the GSD breed should take as a whole. When we were looking to get our puppy I just scratched the surface on this and even that much shocked me as to the amount of vitriol the various sides spew at each other (I’m not kidding…they seem to REALLY hate each other).

Once we got our puppy I signed up for a Shiloh board and posted a message. A day later my wife received a call from the breed founder who was very upset I had posted to that board. Apparently there is a rift in the Shiloh community as well. Another breeder has split off and now breeds King Shepherds (I think that’s what they are called). Yet more bad blood there.

My mistake was an honest one and the breeder pointed my wife to another message board but I misplaced the link and haven’t bothered to find out what the right one is again. I guess I should do that.

It was hilarious when our dog’s molars came in. The things seem as big a Mt. Everest! Given that she still had baby teeth left the effect was pretty weird. She’s currently in that teenage gawky stage where she grows in spurts in different directions and she generally looks all out of proportion. Normal I know but still kinda funny.

“I don’t think the floppy ears are much of a problem in most breeds with floppy ears such as Labs where the ears can partially standup. As I understand it the dogs that this is a concern for would be Basset Hounds and Bloodhounds (the really big floppy ear breeds).”

Ah, that makes much more sense then…these breeds are also far more likely to have their ears drag the ground, where (I would expect) they could pick up more Nasty Things to cause infection.
