Successful predators are very good at picking cooperative victims, and have numerous techniques to feel out a person’s vulnerabilities. They are also very well versed in disarming their victims. It’s actually quite easy, when your mind is unclouded by empathy and morality, to cut right through a person’s defenses. Of course, it doesn’t work every time, but there are a lot of potential targets out there, and each time they fail is just more practice that refines their technique. Eventually, they’ll hit a strike.

None of us can say how we would fare in this situation, because none of us have any way of knowing how many times we’ve been face-to-face with a predator.

I’ve been in situations a hell of a lot more dangerous than this woman CHOOSE to put herself and her child in and came unscathed, so yes, some of us can say absolutely how we would fare in this situtation. We wouldn’t have made so many positively stupid decisions about personal safety. It’s sad the kid died though with a mother as stupid as the one she had, it was only a matter of time. At least, she didn’t trade the girl for a handfull of magic beans. (Or maybe that detail has yet to be published).

But yeah, mother = idiot for multiple reasons, first, for letting the daughter go, and second because she didn’t teach the daughter that going would be bad in the first place.

A lot of WalMarts in my area have Subway, one has a Blimpie’s.

I’m not a parent, so probably am not qualified to have an opinion :), but I’m leaning toward “Mom either had a stupid evening or was already pretty dumb”, and can’t quite bring myself (unfortunately) to rule out the “child prostitution” theory. As for custody of the surviving children, I’d have to know more about her general history as a parent and her overall decision-making ability and level of responsibility.
