You should have called the police. Depending on where you live, that woman may have been guilty of a crime. I hope at the very least that someone told her to her face what a stupid, irresponsible bitch she is.
I heard boiled baby remains in formaldehyde were a hot item on Ebay.
That and bottom skewered eyeballs. They have to be BOTTOM skewered, though. Spiked south of the lens, so to speak. That’s the sign of a truly clueless breeder. Very valuable.
 When will people learn NOT to leave their children alone in the car? It’s never a good idea.
If it’s that much trouble to get the child out of the carseat to go into the store, then back in when you are ready to leave, you have at least 2 options. The first one is to get someone to babysit for a while so you can shop. The second one is to have a friend or relative willing to sit in the car while you run your errand.
I hope that woman doesn’t learn the hard way why leaving a baby alone in the car is a bad idea.
You know what really struck me as the most “off” about the whole incident? The fact that the woman had no desire to “show off” her 2 week old baby.
Most moms, no matter how many babies they’ve had before, want to show off their newborns. “Ooo, look at how beautiful/big/strong they are! They have their daddy’s nose!” etc. That she had no desire to even bring the baby out to be seen strikes me as very sad.
Scene: Very large garden center. The accident took place in a large display of fountains, bird baths, and other garden trinkety stuff. I didn’t see it happen, I heard a large crash and saw a young girl, maybe 2 years old, sitting among a pile of glass. She had apparently been climbing on the display fountain, which had a couple of those large glass garden globes sitting in it.
The kicker? The parents were right there, not paying attention to what their 2-year old was doing. Who the hell lets their kid climb on these displays that have glass in them?
Luckily the kid wasn’t all cut up, but she was screaming. I felt like screaming at the parents.
we had a case like that on campus. i had always thought that educated people didn’t do stupid shit like this, but one of our professors was hauled off for leaving his 3 year old daughter locked in his van all day while he taught classes. Mind you, this man had an air-conditioned office, but refused to leave her there for fear that she would tear something up. Also bear in mind that he makes several times what my wife and I do.
Anyway, they finally called the police on him after numerous warnings (this bugged me- the entire division, as well as his supervisor knew!). His daughter was removed from his custody shortly after.
Assholes come in all shapes, sizes, and from all walks of life, I guess.
A friend of mine who had a baby had her out and about at two and a half weeks, but…shit! I’d love to leave HER in a hot car for a while and see what SHE thinks! (The idea of leaving somebody with the baby is a good one, but only if it isn’t hot. Cars heat up frighteningly fast.)
What chaps my butt about child-neglect or endangerment cases like this: if the child dies as a result of being left in a hot car for hours, drowns in the swimming pool while unattended, etc. the stupid parents generally get let off the hook because “they’ve suffered enough,” “they’ll have to live with this the rest of their lives,” “they’re actually good parents,” etc., etc. ETC! BULLSHIT! Yet it’s the Scary Stranger who we’re all supposed to protect the kiddos from.
Had that happen at the store the other day. It was a cold, damp day, maybe upper 50s (F) in temp, and this woman came into the office supply store to shop. Was in there for like twenty minutes. Then another customer comes in and tells me there’s a blue Ford Explorer in the parking lot, and there’s a little girl in it crying for her mommy. So I run out the door, get the license plate number, and notice that THE CAR IS RUNNING AND THE WINDOWS ARE ROLLED DOWN.
So maybe the kid won’t die of heat stroke, but she could be stolen! The car could be stolen! What kind of idiot does this?!
I told the little girl (maybe 2) that I was going to go get her mommy, went back in the store, got on the loudspeaker and asked for the owner of the car to come up, told her her little girl was crying for her, and she rolled her eyes (yes!) and said “She was asleep when I came in.”
