Florida Movie Theater Shooting Leaves One Dead In Altercation Over Texting

Always know your limit!

I think so, too. Baker, did you mean to post in the MMP and hit this thread by mistake?

Just dont throw a meatball or popcorn at someone?

confused

Ok, I wondered where this post went. It’s obviously in the wrong thread. I’m going to copy it and put it in the right place, so please pretend it wasn’t here.

I’m glad that Baker had a nice Guinness on St. Pat’s day.

I was curious about the status of this case so I did a bit of googling and found that the trial court has set up a web-page specifically for the filings for this case: http://www.curtisreevestrial.com/ .

The two most recent filings were an order for a pre-trial management conference on November 16, at which time the trial date would be set, but there’s also an application last month by Reeves to the Florida Court of Appeal for an order prohibiting the trial from going ahead.

So, it’s chugging through the court system still.

Whooooaaaaaa. Full stop here.

I believe that it is common knowledge that Floridians are a very special kind of Mrrikkan. There’s reliable data that shows that if you are born female and blonde in Florida you run a 72% chance of being kidnapped by the age of 7 and buried alive in a shallow grave.

That said, our dear Baker took it upon herself to celebrate her move to a new state and new church home. They were planning a communal double feature of "The Ten Commandments " and " Monty Python and The Life of Brian ". She cooked her little heart out, making over 600 of her famous Goldilocks Meatballs. ( Not too big. Not too small. Juuuuuust right ! )

She shows up with aforementioned meatballs and a veritable cauldron of home-made sauce. Some inconsiderate nincompoop splashes a little bit of sauce on his bib overalls as he’s filling up his fourth serving and loses his mind, takes out his concealed firearm and shoots up the place and nobody hears the gunshots because he fires during the scene where the slaves are being whipped for collapsing into the mud and straw ???

What’s the world coming to?

Three years, and still not a trial.
Isn’t there a guarantee somewhere of a speedy trial?
Oh wait, that was before the legal system became so cocked up.

I think they forgot about it:

2015!! March! Two and a half years after the original schedule, and still nothing. “As quickly as possible” my ass!

In this were a Law & Order episodes, and it was caught by Logan and Briscoe, they’d have to bring Lennie out of retirement for the trial. If he wasn’t dead by then. Sheesh. I think the wheels of justice have jammed.

The TL;DR I get from this article is that it’s taking so long because the defense attorney is stonewalling it to death, perhaps with the strategy that he can keep his client out of jail until he dies a natural death. Or as nearly so as possible.

The stand your ground hearing last Feb was practically a trial. Over 8 days of witness testimony. Opening and closing arguments.

The bizarre aspect was the defendant had the burden of proof. He had to prove self defense was necessary to avoid great bodily harm. The defense attorney even remarked that he had to dredge up his old skills as a prosecutor.

Now they get to do it all over again in the “trial”.

A person has the right to a speedy trial but they can waive that right. Since the defendant is out on bail, every day delayed is a day less he’ll spend in prison, given his advanced age and the expected sentence if he’s found guilty.

So, did anything ever happen on this case? Like, you know, maybe a trial?

Last I’ve been able to find is that it was adjourned in August 2018, waiting for a ruling whether changes to the “stand your ground” law applied to this case.

Trial of Curtis Reeves postponed due to confusion about ‘stand your ground’ law

That’s the latest news I see googling for “Curtis Reeves Florida shooting”. I wonder what’s going on?

I wondered if perhaps he had died, so I googled “Curtis Reeves obituary” but didn’t get anything.

Per this article from less than a month ago:

…the case is sitting at the Florida State Supreme Court.

Thanks, Omar; good find.

He’s a former cop, that’s what’s going on.

That link shows a road rage case resting on the “Stand your ground” principle. Is the SYG principle what you are referring to?

That article mentions the movie theater case, “In the Pasco movie theater shooting, Curtis Reeves’ stand your ground defense was initially denied. But a subsequent change in the law, placing the burden of proof on prosecutors, might eventually get him a new hearing. The state supreme court still has the case.”

BTW, allowing the stand your ground defense outside of one’s home is a slippery slope that I think Florida will regret.

Yup. Now, when I shoot someone, I have to remember to yell, “He’s coming right us!” first.
