ETA: Okay. They still show previews of coming movies – lots and lots of them – just like always. (That’s what was happening when the shooting went down.) But even before the previews, during the time that used to be nothing on the screen between shows, that’s now non-stop ads.
Used to be, movie theaters had a curtain in front of the screen, to make it look just like a live stage theater. Since there is now stuff playing on the screen non-stop (ads, previews, movie), modern theaters don’t even have that curtain any more.
The other thing that’s changed in theaters lately (but it’s been more like 30 years, not 20) is that there are a lot more movies, and theaters now have multiple (up to a dozen!) smallish auditoria showing different flicks instead of just one or two huge auditoria showing just one or two flicks.

The shooter was a retired police captain and SWAT team leader. I can’t imagine how a disciplined guy like that would do something so fucking stupid. Imagine the tense situations he handled during his long career. To freak out and pull out a gun over a guy texting?
That’s a tragedy for the victim and the shooter.
Over a guy texting before the movie had started, no less.
There were only 25 patrons in the theater at the time. Plenty of empty seats to move to and get away from the ‘texter’.

Very few cops ever rise up the ranks to Captain. I just can’t imagine someone with that training and background doing something like this.
There’s really no defense. He shot and killed an unarmed man. He’ll be in prison the rest of his life.
