Chiron Corp., a maker of human flu vaccine, notiofied the US Dept. of health, that it had to stop production of flu vaccine in its UK plant (there was a chance that the vaccine was contaminated). This left the US with one supplier, in France.
Whay are these vaccines not made in the USA? Is it because of the fear of lawsuits in US courts (should someone die after receiving the vaccine)?
I had heard that the USA tort system was encouraging manufacturers to move vaccine production offshore…is this an issue?
Seems to me that the US SHOULD have a domestic source of such an important medecine…or is the legal issue so intractable?
Chiron is an American company, but the Liverpool factory is the only one owned by it that’s licensed by the FDA to supply vaccine to the US.
