Font Mavens please check in

I am looking for a freeware cursive font where the last letter loops back and underlines the entire word. Has anyone seen anything like this? Are there any suggestions for a website offering a good selection of free cursive fonts?

I haven’t seen exactly what you’re looking for, but About.com has a nice selection of cursive fonts.

I also like this free handwriting font website, although most of them are not cursive.

      • I haven’t seen any font quite like what you describe.
  • If you just gotta have it, do it yourself: there’s a trialware program from High-Logic named Font Creator that doesn’t support hinting, but does everything else. [-what “no hinting” means is that fonts you make will appear lousy on-screen at smaller sizes, but they will print perfectly at any size]
  • You can’t do this in one set of fonts, at least not “normally”: to get what you want, there would have to be two variations of every lowercase letter- an underlining version and a non-underlining version plus the capital set, so you’d have to do the capitals in another font set, or use extended characters for capitals (I’d just use another set for capitals meeself!). Also, it’s easiest to just copy and rename an existing font and change what you need than it is to start from scratch. Also also, , Font Creator has a utility for scanning in images (very cool), but they need adjusting afterwards so it takes a while to do. It’s not a single-afternoon thing but you can get it exactly how you want.

I looked at these, and I liked some of them.
I have a new question that ties in to the OP.
How do I download them?
I clicked the download link, but I didn’t know where in the directory to put the zipped file. I also don’t know how to download a zipped file.
Thank you.

On the free handwriting font site linked above, clip on “Help”. They have complete instructions for downloading and unzipping the files. You will need to install WinZip (they provide a link) in order to unzip them.

I think what you’re looking for is called a swash. Don’t know if these are available in freeware, though (haven’t looked, myself), but that may give you some help when you do your search.

Did you want every last letter (e, t, m, o, r, etc.) to swoosh back and underline the word? I’m not sure if there are any fonts where letters other than “y” do that.

Possible exceptions I can think of include typefaces that resemble a brand logo where the last letter loops down and underlines the word, but I’m not sure it’s a font you’d want, and I’m not even sure I could find an example of what I’m thinking about.

To be honest, I’ve never seen such a font. I’m not even sure it’s possible. Having a last letter underline the entire word is not something that can be added easily to your average font, because word length and letter combination can vary a lot. The underlining would have to appear under every letter in the font, make smooth transitions from one letter to the next, and have the underlined letters in both uppercase and lowercase form.

I’m not saying it doesn’t exist. It might. I’ve just never seen it. And seeing as it sounds like it’d require extra work to make the underlining look just right, I doubt you’d be able to find a freeware version.

My suggestion is to either check out type-enhancer programs such as TypeStyler, or use something like Photoshop or Illustrator. I’ve never used either to accomplish what you’re looking for, though.

Good luck to you.

You hit it. This is for logo work. So if anyone knows of a way to do that, please let me know. I will check back later.

Thanks to all for the suggestions.
