Food consumption relating to urine odor

** Disclaimer: Navigate somewhere else now if talking about the smell of your pee grosses you out. Questions deep-seated for nearly 20 years can get the best of anyone.

I’ve noticed quite a few times over the past ~20 years (I’m 24), that certain foods alter the odor of my urine. “Sugar Smacks” or “Golden Crisp” breakfast cereals make my pee smell just like the fresh cereal (every time). “Popeye’s” (USA Restaurant Chain) biscuits cause the same urine odor, although the biscuits don’t really smell alot like the cereal.

I have recently detected the odor and been unable to deduce a possible food-based source on several occasions, sometimes smelling like the cereal, other times differently. (The cereal smell is by far the most frequent, happening as often as every few months.)

Although I don’t have a reference URL, I do recall reading of others who’ve experienced the same phenomenon with the same breakfast cereal. In addition, the writer at zug.com mentions the taking of an herbal supplement creating a strange urine odor.

My question is this: How does this occur? What chemicals are causing this? Is it the same chemical that I’m smelling both in the cereal and my pee, or a coincidence?

Thanks for your responses. -Jerry
